Afghan map base walls made of bags containing stones

Post by MrD »

It struck me watching the Panorama program tonight on Grenadier Guards in Afghanistan that the walls of the firebases everywhere were made of tough bags that are filled with small stones.

Statics need to be made to represent this if we haven't got them, they are obvious everywhere in the bases,

Sounds like you mean Hesco and Geocell barriers, MrD. They're not always small stones, they're filled with whatever the e-tool or backhoe digs up to fill them. They get shipped-in flat, then get unfolded and filled on-site. :)

Good, we have proper identification! Then next step, statics!

My only experience with bases abroad has been the brick and concrete blank walls surrounding your bog standard african compounds. And the shocking array of AK's and rpg's stacked up against the outside of the armoury wall whilst the armourer smokes his weed before deciding to clean and log them back in!

it's not actually, it's designed to take side impacts (so it will stop shrapnel/warheads) though the should be destructable if you hit them with an RPG multiple times...

They just look too uniform and unrecognisable really. Like the difference between a cube and a boulder

Its HESCO not HEDCO hell they say as much on them :p

They are also expensive as hell IRL, or so I've heard. And they are boring to look at but they work wonders and can be filled by front end loaders which means no sandbags which means no sandbag details which = omgwtfwin.
