The flame/flash during firing does happen, but not enough to really be seen by the human eyes. Those pictures showing a massive flame are from a high-speed photo. When viewing the AT4 during firing, it is just like in the videos. You see a bit of flame for about a half second, but not that much. Mostly smoke and a little shockwave, and a loud thump.

Here's an example, sorry it's artillery and not the AT4. You get the idea though. One is with a normal camera, the second is a high-speed film.

Can we imagine our eyes are all high speed cameras? :(

I'm thinking more along the lines of a flash and lots of smoke.

Or, if for the sake of helping balance the HAT out (i.e.: so firing a HAT exposes your position), the HAT and the LAT could use two slightly different effects.

Fireballs for HAT (slightly smaller would be good- and also hotter looking; yellow flames are the coldest. A bluey tinge at the edge of the gaseous cloud would be good, and also a bit of transparency- flames move and tumble and you can often see through them to an extent). Also briefer, but the idea would be that anyone looking in that rough area would get a really clear picture of where the HAT was fired from.

A brief flash and a puff of smoke (a lá: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LG-ExqFguo4&NR=1 ) would be do for LAT.

Thats what you would think, but many of the Heavy Anti-Tank weapons use a soft launch.
A soft launch ejects the missile from the launch tube to give a low-recoil shoulder launch. The soft launch enables firing from inside buildings or covered positions. Once the missile is clear, the larger propellant in the second stage is ignited and the missile is propelled towards the target.

So swap 'em over? *grin*

My suggestion there was more about the benefit of having HAT light themselves up as a counter to their massive strength, but granted - many have much more subtle launch modes than "wooossssh*boooom*"

Well if we're going to get serious about the ballistics of LAT, we should face up to the fact that IRL the AT-4 does not fire in a straight line, but follows a ballistic arc as in BF1942 (though much less pronounced). I'm not sure about RPG-7s, but I think they're the same in that respect.
