mongol knows the tactic for this, him and i have used it. you direct fire using SL markers and the no-optic AAA just fires on location after it has been confirmed no friendlys there. you need lots of trust with your SL for this, but mongol and i in a squad go back a fair while. I trust his judgement a lot.

more fire, including rifleman fire should be directed this way, its much more effective guiding support weapons like this normally two firing in coordination.

I find AA being used on Infantry annoying in PR, really.

We are talking about the AAA here, right?

all of them

personally, i would use them all apart from the missle AAs, if theres a faster and more effective way of killing enemies, then i would do it

ah, the British spawnable aa on AlBasrah, now THAT was some effective killing

Ive seen some videos of the Ruskys using them against chechens too, google it.

Looks fairly effective.
Heh I got my training to those things :P
ZU23-2 aka 23 ITK 61(old)/95(modernized) nickname Sergei.

Yea, its dirty cheap but its still fairly effective for very close-range air defense and against ground targets. Its pretty useless without support from radar because you’ll need to be prepared for an incoming air target. Our AA unit had a line of four ZU-23 cannons, 2(IIRC) wheeled Crotale mid-range SAMs and a wheeled radar carrier which basically gave us our targets.

Its used against low flying aircrafts, choppers, infantry and light armored vehicles. IIRC the 5 rounds ‘coctail’ we used had 2he, 1 ‘cleaner’ and 2 armor penetrating rounds which made it effective against APCs and armored choppers (=Russian Hinds). Normal rounds can penetrate 25mm armor.
The 61 version we used had another 3x-5x (can’t remember which one) sight for ground targets. Newer 95 model has much better digital sight system with 10-15x zoom(can't remember), automatic lead calculation, thermal sights etc.

Atleast its good for some New year’s fireworks  :

I returned the old layout to the map "fools road day 2" where Russian Army fought Militia, so I found some 3rd party zu23 model and placed it on the map. In singleplayer the game is stable, I have no problems, but when I try to play co-op any player who come close to zu23 make server crash to desktop, so what can I do? I guess I missed some config :-(

Dukuu, I suggest you make a new thread in the modding section to avoid reviving 4 years old threads, also you will have more help there. :)

This discussion is actually pretty relevant now. On Qinling, my entire infantry squad was killed by a British Spartan. The explosion radius when hitting land is larger than a HAT kit and dominates at close range.

In my opinion the missiles should have an extremely small explosion radius when hitting terrain or static objects.

Using CAS AA missiles against ground targets takes a little practice but is quite neat once you get used to where the "cross air" is.

I have used AA many times in a pinch-

I was in Muttrah on the main East road on an AA built to gaurd the harbor (along with other assets, but we capped north and my team moved up to take docks)

Since I stayed back to defend alone, I got in the AA.... Suddenly to the south a whole squad was moving towards me near the buildings on the main road so I shot the AA at them. The first rocket totally missed becasue i aimed right for them, but when I aimed for the side of the building next to them BOOM! half the squad went down..... Naturaly I was overwhelmed and I had to turn to the rifle, but it was helpful and certainly unexpected!

Haha, I remeber once using the Stormer on Qinling I was looking at the sky all the time but then I started looking around the mountains for threats and 600m away I noticed a FOB with a 6-man squad that had just spawned on it. I fired 6 missiles one by one and as the squad spread out each missile went right next to them as if I was guiding them, killing all of the squad and the FOB in the process. I laughed my *** off.

DIY Weapons of the Libyan Rebels - In Focus - The Atlantic
Photo 26 and 34 are both AA weapons from the ... idk, old, 1960's or 1970's.

ZSU-23-4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Russian ZSU "Zeus" "Shilka" is an antiquated anti aircraft weapon that is now specifically designated a anti light vehicle and anti infantry weapon in almost every country it's deployed.
It's equivalent in PR is definitely used as such. Especially on Iron Eagle.

Something I thought was pretty strange a while ago, i fired a stinger and hurt myself when it hit tree in front of me. So I would agree that the blast radius is a bit too big. Of course reducing it would hurt the effectiveness against aircraft, so it's a bit of a catch 22.
