Some questions about squad leader and commander

Post by zoog »

Hi all,

I recently started to play Project Reality and I'm starting to know more and more. I have read a lot in the Wiki but there are still some questions I would like to ask about the Squad Leader and Commander. I tested some stuff on a local server to see what is possible because I don't want to ruin a live game, but some things were still not clear.

Like:

- Is it possible for a squad leader to set an objective on the map which he can't see. Because when I tried in my test server I could only mark positions I could visually see. I could not set objectives for places that were far away and out of my sight.

- I saw that you can, as a SL, request certain things from the CO (iirc ammunition, support, those kind of things). Does the CO get a message when you request something as a SL, and will the ammunition or other things dropped at your location? How does that work? What does the Commander see when Squads are requesting things?

- What does the CO do besides placing things (bunkers/razor wire/sandbags etc.). I mean, does he get more information on his map. Like the different objectives from all the squads? Can he give locations to the SL on where to attack next (besides using VoiP)?

I think those were my main questions. I must say I really love this mod. It's what I've been waiting for for years. And I finally found it :)

1-You can place a marker by going onto the command map and right clicking and then select the type of marker.

2-Yes it comes up in a message that he can see.

3-Thats a lot to do. He also sends orders and can defend a position by setting up defenses. And yes he can tell them where by placing a marker same way as a SL does.

And I hope you enjoy being a PR SL, and/or Commander. Lead your men to victory!

I think it's right click, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, welcome to the community. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay ;) .

press caps lock to bring up a map , then right click and select the type of marker e.g attack , move , defend, mine ect

- I saw that you can, as a SL, request certain things from the CO (iirc ammunition, support, those kind of things). Does the CO get a message when you request something as a SL, and will the ammunition or other things dropped at your location? How does that work? What does the Commander see when Squads are requesting things?
the commander has a commander screen by pressing caps lock and when you request a supply drop it shows up as a flashing icon and he can also hear the "request supply drop"

- What does the CO do besides placing things (bunkers/razor wire/sandbags etc.). I mean, does he get more information on his map. Like the different objectives from all the squads? Can he give locations to the SL on where to attack next (besides using VoiP)?
in the command screen the commander can click on a squad number and see where and what type of marker the SL has placed, he can also give a squad a attack or move or defend ect marker and the squad leader can accept this order by pressing "page up" then the hole squad can see it.
hope this helps.

Got another little question about the role of the CO for experienced players. Where does he typically go, does he engage in infantry combat, how will he lead his man to victory? I mean, if you want to succeed, do you form a bodyguard group around the CO and will the CO stay far away from the front line? I understand that it depends on what type of CO you have but what do you guys reckon for the role of CO?

Also one other thing, I couldn't find anything in the wiki about a limit on the Officers Kit. So is this Kit available unlimited times in the special kit pool? And is there a time limit between requesting a new Officers kit if you died as SL?

(Off topic)
i read it too, but only because i STILL don't have a computer that can play PR and so i read it in preparation, because i couldn't learn hands on.

(On topic)
I'm not sure if i quite understand your first question but if your talking about how you just press "t" and set an order and if you are looking to high or to far away the order says it works but doesn't show a place marker?
if that is your question. the same thing happened in VBF2 just need to press caps-lock (default) and set command marker

The CO should do what he's there for - command. Which means, stay away from the front line, give orders, request squad status, plan ahead etc. When the front line moves, he should build Bunkers, firebases to provide more spawnpoints. Maybe some razorwire to defend CPs.Therefore he needs some Riflemen or Engineers. But he doesnt need a squad assigned only to protect him or build stuff. If he orders a squad nearby to come over and finish that bunker, they should do so, if they aren't complete noobs.
But IMHO the CO is there to provide the SLs with the information they need, and give proper orders, so attacks are coordinated.
Its still better to have no commander, than to have one who only drives around, building stuff thats never finished and wastes tickets and doesn't give orders or cares about the situation on the front line. If you are CO, talk to the SLs, and try to explain to them (if they don't follow your orders anyway) why you want them to attack there, defend here or move there. If they aren't complete idiots, they will listen to you.
IIRC officer kits are always avaliable for CO and SLs since 0.6. There is also no more timelimit.
