Ive wondered what exactly it is, and where one obtains it. I know its used for modeling but is it free or what?

It's for 3D modeling primarily. There is a 30 day trial version I believe, but the full version is fairly pricy.

Tou can get GMax for free and it has many of the same features as 3DSMax with regards to modeling.

In case you hadn't noticed Wasteland's tidying up, guys = please don't discuss how people can get a hold of any software illegally on the forums. We can't be seen to be condoning software piracy.

Get Blender or Wings 3d. Both are free to use and are good for learning the basics. Modeling is more or less the same in every 3d application. You don't need to spend thousands or dollars on 3d studio max in the beginning.

But if you really want to use 3d studio and you happen to be a student then the 2 years (IIRC) student license is a good choice.

Is this PR General Discussion?

Anyways, like others already said, it's a program for 3D Modeling. GMax is free and almost has all features that 3DSMax has.

EDIT: Whoops, someone already posted GMax :p
