Squad hopping - why?

Post by willgar »

As a long time but not "hardcore" player could some better informed person explain to me the tactical / gameplay advantage of people who squad hop? My understanding was that PR (and maybe even vanilla) had sort of discouraged the practice by timer / repspawn penalties but on a few recent occassions i have played on servers where it was rife.

These were not newbie servers but on IGI / tactical gamer although it wasnt during peak hours - So i assume, i am missing some new tactic?

maybe i am using the wrong terminology but players who simple join squads for a few minutes, say nothing, then leave and join another squad... rinse & repeat.

squad hopping was a vBF2 tatic mainly used by clans, which was also used in PR that when the Squad leader died, he would simpley leave his squad, some one else alive would become the squad leader and then he could spawn on his old squad member that was still alive. It was a crappy tactic used by many people and it was just a huge exploit of the SL spawn system. Many vBF2 players did not like the change thou it has brought alot more into PR's squad play and less gey tactics. We also had our own squad hopping system in place before the vBF2 one, where if you hopped you would have a huge spawn time, thou wasnt as good as the EA fix.

I think quite a few people do it to find a good squad. They join, see what the squad is up to, if they are talking or just a bunch of, erm, "noobs".

I always say hello when I join a squad, but if I get no reply and they are all over the place, after a few minutes I sometime leave to find a better squad.

the last guy pretty much spelled it out. in PR you got your good squads and your bad squads. il join a squad, say hi, see if i get a response, look on the mini map to see them scattered all over trying to find the L33T SnIPZorZ Rifle and in 2 seconds im in a different squad until i find a REAL squad.

Exactly,
for example yesterday, I had tried 3 squads, before I found one, where I at least get an answer to my "hello"

I don't hop from squad to squad to get kits, thats wrong, though there is a form of squad hopping where everyone leaves squad to spawn on a new SL that you can only spawn on him *after* hes the new SL and you die again...

Tend to do that when im joking around with a buddy and the 50 cal, swapping leader positions of the 2 man locked squad so after I die I can cover the ladder for him...

When it comes to bad squads and leaving them, reasons I go are because...

A. Leader is not wanting to lead at all, and has no voip
B. Squad speaks a different language than me that I can't understand
C. SL has a squad of morons who won't listen to simple commands and run off willy nilly with sniper rifles and fail to do anything such as: get in a car/move to a position or flag..

most of the time i play i always inherit a squad and become squad leader.. it sucks becasue i can't use VOIP and its hard to lead people without it. If i try leaving and rejoining everyone does the same, arg

Squad hopping

-1 The act of jumping an unsuspecting squad with your own Squad.

-2 After you and or your squad mate kills a noob at close range. The entire squad dose a few leaping teabags on the dead tango. *1

-3 In the case of a M203 lading in proximity to a poorly run squad that has bunched up. There for resulting in the kill and ragdoll affect on the tango squad lead and at least two other members of his man hugging squad. *2

*1 personal favorite teabag to date is the “cross fire hurricane”
*2 A tango model must leave the ground to count as a full ragdoll.

We forget to mention needy/clingy SL who likes to dictate just about every move you make without sense or reason.

I once joined a squad where the SL insisted on honking the horn on his vodnik continuously.

It was like he was trying to see how many times he could die or something.

*cough cough* :o ops:
... but if you happen to be under the influence it sort of makes sense. Drive to the battlefield. Honk your horn and the enemy will even come to you! All you have to do is exit the car and kill them. Or the gunner on the roof. It's time efficient. And stats friendly :m1helmet:
