C4 simply detonating next to it won't kill it, though if you really want to you can stack several kg of it and the blast force will push the tank a good distance away.
most MBTs nowadays can survive a nuclear blast so long as they r not in ground zero, an explosive detonating next to them isn't much of a comparison. But a C4 sitting right on top of an MBT top armour or engine compartment is a wee bit different story. Explosive power by itself means little to a tank, a tank can receive explosive blast that would collapse a small building and still be perfectly fine, but when you concentrate the blast to a small part of the tank, then the tankers really have something to worry about now.
anyway, in the game itself, as far as i can observe, SABOT rounds are most effective against the heavy armoured vehicles, tanks especially.
a single SABOT to the rear of a tank would kill it instantly. On the other hand, multiple HEAT on the tanks won't kill it (eventually it will after 3 or 4 but if he returns fire with SABOT then ur toast). On the light vehicles however it works the other way around, a SABOT on the MEC van will bring it to near death, but not destroy it instantly (which means the driver can jump out), but a single HEAT on it would instantly destroy it giving no chance whatsoever for the occupant to bail out.
APCs are something i am not yet certain, i haven't tested which round is more effective in bringing them down.
theoretically, since APCs in BF2 doesn't seems to come with ERA panels, nor do they have chobham type armour, they should go down with HEAT just as fast as they do with SABOT.

Yeah ... just played for a bit, especially the LAV, its 2 tows are hard to beat.
It may just be me, but I thought that a 120mm round from a MBT can put a hole through almost any armour on the battlefield, and since APCs don't have the thickest or even most advanced armour, there is no reason they should be able to take TWO APFDS rounds.
APCs are meant to carry and support infantry, NOT kill MBTs !

a good shot with APFSDS round would pretty much punch an APC clean on one side and out the other. in the process it should also spray any cavity along it's path with molten metal spray from the resulting friction and KE transfer.
in short, yeah an APC aint gonna survive a direct hit from an APFSDS, unless the round punched clean and didn't hit anything vital, which is kinda unlikely if you ask me, passenger, engine, driver, ammo compartment... any of these should be hit, but unfortunately BF2 engine can't model specific component.
how about this instead for balancing, upon impact with the APFSDS round, the APCs driver view shakes, distorts, whatever works to prevent ppl from aiming and shooting back. (the concussion effect from the artilerry might work) and a single APFSDS round brings the APC to the brink of death. Of course it's a lot easier to just instant kill the APC with a single APFSDS round, and technically, since the APCs have no ERA one HEAT should kill them as well, but then the APFSDS round have practically no purpose except for tanks.
Bringing the APC to near death state similar to the vodnik's reaction to direct hit from APFSDS round, in addition to the screen effect (to negate the possibility of immediate counter attack from the APC) should give the tankers extra things to consider (if they want to make sure the passenger and the car is dead they have to reload with HEAT else they just fire away with the APFSDS) while on the other hand giving the APC driver the option of either staying in the APC (which is about to explode if he was hit by the APFSDS) and wait for the short duration screen effect to fade off and then attempt to retaliate with the TOW at the cost of the driver's own life (since if he attempt to stay in soon to explode APC and fire back, he won't be able to escape to safety before the APC goes into scrap) or he could just bail immediately and forget about trying to fire back. Of course if he was smacked by a HEAT round, then he would be dead instantly.

- single APFSDS round brings the APC to the brink of death.
AGREED> The way it is right now, you are much more deadly in the LAV than you are in any other vehicle.
- concussion effect on apc driver when hit
Another very good idea! In fact any tanker to be hit by such a round should recieve this effect (unless it was a richochet)

PS bring this up as a seperate topic, so the devs see this!
now that the beta testing on maps with alot of tanks (steel thunder, el alamein 2, etc) we have a way better idea of what imbalances to the tanks there is. before large groups mostly played on karkand, and never with more than 1-2 tanks per side.
this should be fixed for this next release i think! (especially if larger tank battles are planned)
