Zatar Wetlands shoud be a British vs Insurgents Map for 0.7

Post by $kelet0r »

The more I play Zatar Wetlands, the more I want this map to be the first to truly take advantage of the long range infantry possibilities that it offers. At the moment, we have 60 ton monsters operating happily on terrain they would get bogged down in in real life, and where low cost light vehicles and infantry should be securing it. The mountain passes force fights to secure hills for safe passage through the valleys while the green zone in the middle is reminiscent of trench warfare. Then the hill in the centre is essentially a fortified firebase that can rain machine gun and rocket death on anything that dares approach. If mortars ever get finished, that hill would be even more valuable. It would be perfect for some AAS conventional vs unconventional warfare, where the terrain reduces the technological advantage of the NATO force drastically to almost mirror balance in assets type but not capability, and the British (US army isn't ready so it has to be the British) try to retake the oil refinery and pipelines seized by the insurgency.

At the moment, Zatar has brief moments of intense genius for a few minutes when there might be just one APC or tank alive and the infantry navigate to the flags .... until all the armour spawns again every 10 minutes and the game bogs down into solo tanking wars (when will this be fixed???). :(

Infantry warfare is the bread and butter of project reality - saturating the game with so many tank-centric maps is not using the assets of the game to their full potential. While I enjoy an armour showdown like the next man, having more than one armour heavy map ingame is overkill imo - and Zatar unlike Kashan and Al Kufrah and Daqing etc. has potential to be so much more in the infantry centric combined arms spirit of PR.
Discuss.

Why would it have to be British?I dont see a problem with the USMC...

As for the offensive scenario for NATO,

I would love to see it as a more infantry centric map, and Zatar isn't as epically huge as most of the other maps. I think it would be a great idea, also I don't think it would be much work to convert. Change/remove some vehicles is basically all we're talking about, just need some tweaking on numbers of vehicles, maybe some other map changes to make it better for infantry.

Zatar Wetlands British vs. Insurgents...

Dude....get off the drugs.

Although I support the idea of less armor rape on that map, maybe 6 MBTs on each side would be better, with half on delayed spawn, so you don't have a convoy of armor rolling out of the base at start.

Interesting
My thinking was if it were more along the lines of a Talibanistic map, well the Marines have little to no active role in Afghanistan. So with the US Army unfinished ...
Anyway the winks give me happy feelings :)
Now if only mortars could code themselves and be ready before 0.8 and life would be perfect

Ermm ?

Marines have plenty of activity. In fact the USMC were the first conventional forces into Afghanistan. They are smaller than the army, hence less. It really doesnt fit the Taliban for several reasons: Their is little oil in afghanistan, and the taliban would never be moronic enough to fight in wide open fields such as Zatar against conventional forces. They learned that lesson in the first few years of OEF.

???
The only conventional Marine force in Afghanistan currently is the 2nd Intelligence Battalion from what I can gather. Whatever happened in 2001/2002 is a long time ago - the US Army is the dominant military in that theatre.
PR is set in the 'future' which gives it great writer's scope and vital pipelines of all fuels through Afghanistan has been on the cards for decades.
Mise en Scene

The daily combat in the green zone of Helmand begs to differ - only the tactics have changed, not the battlefield. And Zatar is hardly wide open fields. There are mountains, hills and waterways that offer plenty of cover.

But semantics be damned - I look forward to PR doing Zatar justice.

Zatar in .7 is assymetrical, but not in the way you're probably thinking of

Is it king of the hill or something?

Well looking at the guide it says that al kufrah oilfields will be GB vs MEC so i'd be happy enough with that :D
