The Pilot Lounge

Post by Golden7B »

Hey all, I just wanted to make a thread in which the more experienced pilots could give general advices to rookies...(Specifically pilots using joysticks)

Basically, what is your joystick, settings in PR and best advices you could give for the beginners. (ex.: The must have buttons you would have to configure on stick, etc....)

In my case, I just bought a Logitech Extreme 3D (didnt want to pay too much since I'm more of an infantry type, but I wanted to try flying with a joystick) // I'm still in the testing of the best configuration for me (sensitivity etc...) // And the best advice I could give myself is to continue playing on the training kashan ;-)

While practicing, a few questions popped my mind:
- Is it possible to spot ennemies, only using the joystick buttons?
- Why dont I see a difference in the different camera views? Is there a efficient way to use the mouse look?
- Why am I not able to land a freaking LB without rolling it over  (I mean, I wasnt bad at all flying with the mouse keyboard, but now I'm just real bad at landing...)
- What is the buttons to open the backdoor in the big transport chopper? (don't know the exact name)
- And much more which I forgot.....

So, any advices?

Thanks

Ya i use a mouse for flying. Iam a pretty good pilot. And in the LB just land on flat ground, due to the landing gear without wheels it tips over easier.

Best way to do a ground attack on static and moving targets in the A10 using a combination of minigun, rockets and bombs? when I see videos both in and out of the cockpit on A10 ground attacks they seem to climb very high, go near vertical down or at least in a very steep dive and theyll slow down using the air brakes so the can tilt the aircraft more easily.
At least thats how it works best irl, PR anyone?

by pilots do you mean jet or chopper pilots? i am not much of a jet pilot. maybe its because i don't use my joystick.. and if i use it i just really suck at it. so no i choose for the choppers (no joystick required :) )

I think I can help you with this one. When dealing w/ the transport little birds, you have to take control of the situation. Instead of hovering and trying to land straight down, come in at an angle, If you come in at the TG server, on Qwai river i can show you a good example. W/ the attack chopper you have to hover it because of the different mechanics, but you can do the angle landing, you just have to jump out then jump back in so it doesn't roll over.

I've only recently mastered the LB using a mouse. Don't own a joystick, but as oldirti described the best way to land is to come in fast, nose a little down, and lowering your throttle. Let it float in and then smack your back key to drop like a rock.

well i fly with k+M & I use the mouse to pitch & yaw. to land the LB's going fast, as long as the craft is pretty level you just press and hold decelerate, and yaw the opposite direction it tries to spin/flip towards. when i've the helo steady a wee tip is I use mouselook so pitch and yaw is disabled utill I want to take off again this means the helo doesn't budge an inch unless I want it to..

Am i the only person in BF2 that uses the keyboard only for flying choppers and jets?

Still the same WASD key setting for thrust and brakes, but for the rudder movements i use arrow keys, up makes my nose look down, down makes my plane go up, and the side keys help me bank :)

Its alot easier and im able to evade people pretty easily that use keyboard + mouse

man you are going to have a hard time getting used to flying with joystick if you were flying with mouse or keyboard.

anyways heres what i found for joystick setup for bf2, hope it helps you out:

I use a joystick when flying the helicopter and if you have good throttle control you'll find that it is far better and easier to fly with a joystick than without. Cutting you power down to 70%-50% on approach and quickly cutting it down to 55-0% just as you land seems to work well for me. Just as you hit the ground pull back on the stick just a bit to bring your nose up.

Your horizon line is your friend. You'll be amazed at how much better you'll fly if you pay attention to it; keep it slighting below the horizon at all times as you fly.

no matter what anyone tells you, the best pilots in PR use joysticks.

can you be good without one, yes.

but having a good stick makes everything better!

Edit- i meant about jets, not choppers

Alright thanks everybody! So basically, my main problem is trying to fly the chopper with a joystick.....And since I don't really like flying the planes, the stick is pretty useless hehe. Guess I have to go back to good old mouse and keyboard. It's sad, cause its pretty nice flying the chopper with the stick, its just the landing part that is impossible....(I'll have to find another game in which I can use it more to amortize it....any suggestions? ;-) )

Thanks again!

Dont be tempted to stay on the strafing run for that extra second to put some more ammo down range(ive crashed a few times doing this). You can always just come back around.

the main advantage for me using the mouse and keyboard for helos is I can use mouselook really easily which gives me a better view of the battlefield. I'm also much more precise using the mouse for pitch and yaw compaired to a stick - specially because I use full sensitivity & i'd be all over the shop with a stick that senistive, or, I would have to spend ages setting deadzones and what-not.. I use a stick for jets but for helo's K&M all the way..

And for the joystick users for helos, do you use the stick software also to calibrate, or just the bf2 one...?

i don't even see the advantage of a joystick with choppers, there is no long turn rate
and its only less accurate then a mouse. or at least for me.

in the little bird, if you over uneven ground, just hover at a low level :)

thats what i do, you can drop off people on very steep mountain sides this way.

I also use a mouse and keyboard to fly in bf2 and project reality, mainly because flying with a joystick isn't responsive enough. However, for armed assault, i use a joystick, because its easier to multi task when operating an all inclusive joystick with incorporates both roll pitch and turn.

Keyboard and mouse for the choppers is a lot easier than a joystick, i reserve that for Fast jets and ArmA.
