a flare is used to maintain altitude while losing speed, or make descending softer
in planes you want to pull your nose up so you won't crash while landing

in a chopper all you have to do is predict its movement and react properly on its behavior to keep it stable

Well, piloting in a chopper with the joy stick, I'd advise getting the little bird/blackhawk as level as possible, and slowly lower the throttle. Dont let the joystick shift or it might go belly up.

I dont use a joystick that often, neither have I played pr in a long time, but I do know a little about chopper joysticking and some about piloting with one.

The hardest thing flying a chopper with joystick is, atleast for me, to hoover properly. I must do small adjustments all the time, and this results in instability and sometimes TK troopers getting off the chopper. Very anoying.

The second hardset thing with joystick is that I have a hyper sensitive joystick when flying jets. This is even if i have sensibility and yaw factor setup identical as helicopters. cant figure this out...

x52 pro joystick is the way to go. I was able to bind the hat switch to look to the sides with some smart cfg tweaks.

Your lucky you got that to work, I have absolutely no idea how to work joy to key at all. I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, can anyone tell me what to do?

joysticks in choppers are much better, espically if you want to fly attack helos where you have to hover nice and steady, easy with a joy just set your throttle to the correct level and matain balance with tiny amounts of pressur on the jostick.

in jets try and get close before firing, leave your radar on then turn if off when you see the enemy, wait till they are level or doing a shallow turn or are level, at longer distances fire an Aim-120 (big circle) if out of them try and catch up, (use those afterburners) , if out of missiles try and get close and fire into their turn.

Try and get a mate together and practice dog fights ona practice server, good way to learn. Me and my mates had a last one standing competion, where 1v1 winner stays on, guess who won!!

I fly extremely well with a joystick in a a10 but as for helis.. i will never touch one with a joystick again i just find it way to hard and i see no problem flying a heli with a mouse and keyboard.

Joystick for choppers is better esp if you have an analogue throttle, but takes a bit of getting used to, and can bash the ego a bit to learn how to fly all over again.

All i got to say for the little bird
1)don't use a joystick its better to use a mouse
2)fly low and fast. the lower you are harder for AA to get you
3) when your coming in for a landing tap the "S" dont hold it

-The LB is one of the best choppers, I have no problems landing it. You just have to land it like birds land, rapid descent, pull up hard when you're about to touch the ground and then hold "s" and it will stabilize itself(If you don't hold down "s" after touching down it'll either tumble to one side of forwards). My favorite must be the EuroCopter 635, it's nose doesn't drop down when you accelerate and is quite maneuverable, perfect for my low flying(Too bad it isn't featured on many maps though).

Could you maybe explain how you did that?
I've been searching for that for a while, cant get it to work..
I use a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 btw.

Saitek X52 All the way!, but I just go to WEAPON 6/7/8 and hit left, right and up on my HAT, and to return, i go to WEAPON 1, and pull my HAT down. That helps me out ALOT, and for jet flying, fly high at least above 2000 ft, then you arn't vunerable to AA, only to enemy jets, and only if you need to make a strafing or bombing run, then thats when you dive down and go on the run, but always remember this:

Fly with COVER, coordinate with the team, if you need AA cover and tank cover, let them know, if you need to bomb the SV because of over-running armor, then tell the infantry to fall back, and you'll take care of the armor. Well, I'll write more, but not at the moment, got homework I must work on. =)

A few things I consider important:

1)When flying a transport chopper, take the safest route to your destination. Go around the whole map if that's what is needed to not get killed by AA. Good old high altitude (300-500) tactic is also very affective and I recommend using it for example in Barracuda if the shore is full of AA's all the way through. Sure, it takes time, but it's worth it if a chopperful of people reach objective because of it.

2)If you have enough flares, take precautionary actions and fire flares when you enter enemy territory, even if not locked by AA. Then you have a better chance of making it to your destination.

3)Be active on delivering 2 supply crates per spot. That way you make sure that your teammates on the ground have a backup plan if things start falling apart.

Am i the only person in BF2 that uses the keyboard only for flying choppers and jets?

Still the same WASD key setting for thrust and brakes, but for the rudder movements i use arrow keys, up makes my nose look down, down makes my plane go up, and the side keys help me bank

Its alot easier and im able to evade people pretty easily that use keyboard + mouse

The thing about using keyboard only, instead of keyboard + mouse, is that you are able to have continuous movement on a certain direction, simulating what happens with a joystick. A mouse has a little bit more freedom but, yes, controlling a jet with a mouse would require way too much training for me!

Victor - Also consider the throttle control on most joysticks.

I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and I find it easy to land anything, be it the new GR4 or a LB.

KB+M are ok for precision stuff but you cant get a continuous movement in one direction (as said above) but joysticks with the right sensitivity can be used to devastating effects, anyone who has been in my transport LB for Muttrah will know, I'll fly below the roof line of the houses to keep the squads alive (if your going to try that then a word of warning, mind the APC that always seems to be there .)

Like I say to everyone who asks how to fly on a training server, using a joystick will be so much easier and so much more worth it in the long run.
