Project Reality - not keen on new players
Let me introduce myself. I was first introduced to Project Reality over a year ago by a friend. Recently he has mentioned 0.7 is a vast improvement over the older versions and that we should give it a try in a mini-LAN scenario with a few friends. I enjoyed this so much I decided to give this a try on my home comp.
After remembering the basics of the game I was off. I joined a squad. The leader got in a jeep and I followed. He was approaching a nearby base then got chased off by an APC, at which point he retreated back to main base - wtf? At base there are more of our squad lingering around. No one said or did anything. I then enter a tank and start bleeding for some unknown reason. Even when I get out of the tank, I am still bleeding and try and bandage up, but I'm still bleeding. Then I'm choking to death. Then I die, and have to wait another two minutes to respawn again. When I return to this insane world I catch up with my teamates and am teamkilled and booted out of the squad. Oh yeah, there was no one on the voice comm so I didn't have a clue what was going on.
Second game I went in I join a squad 5/6. I enter a jeep with my buddies. The jeep is not moving. I waited a whole minute thinking "wtf?" I learn on the voice comm that "Chronic666" is finishing "rolling up a spliff". After another lengthy two minutes he joins us. Hurrah! Then there's some dispute over how many people can get in the jeep, so it appeared some of our squad leave the jeep and wander off somewhere. After another minute of wondering what the hell this team leader wants us to do, I then discover I have been kicked out of the squad.
Third game - no voice comm on my team. We start going towards the waypoints given. I die a few times. Then I respawn at some base where I am dropped from the sky and sustain injury for no reason. I then get shellshocked and think "wtf?! the enemy can't be with us already?". I turn round to discover it's a fellow team member who is playing a prank on me with his machine gun. Nice one. Then he shoots me in the back...
I have to say as much as enjoyed the game with friends, I find the game and community very initimidating. I would like to suggest to the devs, that more should be done for new players to get them involved and not feel like the scum of the earth when they join a game.

We had 2 new players in my squad last night. After explaining that to use armor you have to get a crewmen kit (hit T and "request kit") and how to use the zoom on the main gun (default key "c") we were off. The trick is to find a squad that is actually communicating on VOIP. I still have that issue and I've been playing for awhile now. Also, best tip is to find a good server and stick with it. You can normally find me in the TCombat server in the evenings. Have a peek at the manual (a great deal has changed even from .6 and I'd highly suggest you give it a browse before going online again).
Other than that, have fun.

Most servers are welcoming. If you don´t know something then ask. Although I do recommend reading the manual.
If no one is using VOIP, say something. Maybe they think that no one else is using it too. Or just find a different squad. Sometimes if there are a couple of clan members in a squad they will be using teamspeak. So they may appear not to say anything or be doing "weird" things. Just speak up if you have a mic or type in the squad chat.
Finally, if you find you are having a **** game, just disconnect and find another server.
PS: "that more should be done for new players to get them involved and not feel like the scum of the earth when they join a game."
That will have much more to do with the server and its players than anything else.

Sounds like it to me that you just had a few bad rounds
what you should do is get your mates together and play in the same squad, that way its a lot more enjoyable

I second all of the above.
Sometimes it only takes one guy to break the ice greeting people when he joins to make a squad quiet as the grave come to life and chat away.
There is a thread around here somewhere that recommends a couple of servers that will give you a good ping and a good game.
Only problem is, even if you DO talk over VOIP and on a server that you usually have good gaming in, you can end up having a "strange" night like you described. As mentioned, just disconnect and try to find another server.

You need to read over the manual carefully mate.
You can't drive armour without a crewmans kit you have to request. There are rules for requesting. Be careful of 2 man need to operate some armour effectively.
You can only spawn on main base, a bunker or firebase OR your own squads Rp. Spanw on another squads RP and you might just fall and die!
There are a lot of new players out there that need to read the manual, familiairise themselves with the maps and have the logical capability of understanding the game physics and moving around the maps in a timely order.
And those going AFK really should not be CO/SL/driving a vehicle for their teams sake!

Im afraid allot of peole play project reality for no apparent reason; tending to trot off by themselves, meaning that someone who wants to play the game properly, contributing to the positive aspects of PR, can't join the server
You also need to make sure you are on a good server, where the teamplay is ample and 2/3 have a mic and 3/4 are willing to co-operate.
Also, to make comments on the mod and it's systems and concepts, without reading the manual seems a bit ignorant. I suggest you read it before you head into the servers and judge. It seems you miss understand some of the systems, especially those that concern jumping from a moving vehicle( you will become seriously injured at full speed).

Hi there and welcome to the PR forums !
My suggestions:
First off, take some team and read the manual - open the PDF file created on you desktop or follow this link. Believe it or not, it's very well written and fun to read
Second - while in game, it's generally a bad idea to join the default called squads (eg. Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, you got the point). If you want to be sure most of the squad will have microphone then look for squads with either VOIP, MIC(s) or TEAMWORK (or TW for short). Smactard players that you just described are usually booted of the squad very fast.
Another thing are the servers. There are some very teamplay oriented servers to be found. My suggestion is Tactical Gamer if you live in America (although pings are not that bad for European players as well - I have ~110 in Czech Republic), if you leave closer to Europe then Tactics & Teamwork, Thors Brigade and .:iGi:.
The servers you might want to stay away are servers running 24/7 the same map - they seem to attract too many 'bad players'. It's a pity - Al Basrah used to be such a fun
I wish you some better rounds in future - don't give up just yet

I didnt read everything in this thread but let me just drop my 2 cents on this new player thing because lately ive been having some experiences with this.
My gripe with new players is that they dont listen when you tell them that they are doing the wrong thing. Some times you get lucky and run into a new guy who wants to learn and is willing to embrace the whole "taking orders" thing. Most of the time you find some jock from BF2v who will literally write "shut up!! i can do what i want" or "hey man its just a game" but what they dont realize is that they ruin it for everyone else. The worst is when you run into a new clan. Heaven forbid you tell them hey you shouldnt laugh when wasting a transport helo while the rest of your squad is trying to but down a rally. Im not naming names but they know who they are.
I guess thats it, they just dont want to take orders and learn how to play right.

I played my first round last night... didn't have any issues myself (aside from frantically cycling through the F keys to get out of the turret when I got into an APC), but I had a hell of a time explaining to my squad leader that I was lagging behind because a fellow noob had spawned into the game and was running after me, shooting at me.
You know the type... walk walk, shoot at you, stand there look at you, follow you a bit, shoot at you some more... and they never, ever type to you or use voice com or show any outward sign that they're anything other than a bot. A very originally dumb bot, programmed by a very talented person.

Someone needs to read the manual... Btw, get a mic and use it. If you cant hear anyone using VOIP while playing PR, go to options and check if your VOIP is enabled
Never argue with an idiot, he will just drag you down to his level and beat you by experience

I didn't move out of a moving vehicle. I moved into the back of a stationary tank and somehow became injured. Weird shit like this doesn't need to be in a manual, I will still point out how ridiculous this is.'[R-MOD wrote:Mongolian_dude;581791']Also, to make comments on the mod and it's systems and concepts, without reading the manual seems a bit ignorant. like it's been said 20 times in this thread, you need to read the manual. there isnt any "back of the tank" that you speak of. you needed a crewman kit to be in there. this is why you were killed. this is in the manual and is not "weird shit", it's the rules of the game.Hardee wrote:I didn't move out of a moving vehicle. when i am playing and someone joins my squad and says this is their first game of PR, i (and the rest of my squad) goes out of our way to make sure they know what they're doing. the way i look at it, if a brand new player gets to play PR in my squad seeing all the teamwork involved, they will fall in love with the mod and playing it the "right way". i love having brand new players playing with me, as long as they're putting the team first.
