"English voice comms only" option

Post by Thyreus »

Small problem really. For some reason, when you choose to only play English voice comms, it also replaces the British voices with American ones, which is a shame seeing as I like the British voice, but I'm having a hard time understanding the Chinese etc ones...

Fortunately enough I'm so content with this mod that I only can find small things like these to complain about. :)

If you can understand or remember chinese then its to your advantage as you can distinguish enemies by their radio calls.
english only means everyone sounds the same and you wont notice the enemy behind the wall dropping an ammo bag, etc

It would make things so much easier if MEC and PLA just spoke English with an accent instead of their respective languages.

It would make things easier and less realistic. For some reason EA went really over the top on this aspect, it'd be ironic if PR reversed that

We need a wiki or guide to understanding the voice comms in game, Im also a bit lost of which means what. Anyone well versed in mandarin ?

Chineese that speak english in Project Reality?... think again.

Another thing, there is a lot of PR players that doesn't use english as their national language. For them, english language is foreign as much as chineese language for you.

BTW. If you play long enough, you are able to recognize most of the chineese or MEC speech..

it'd be good if that option could be disabled :P definately not realistic being attacking by chinese-americans lol :D

Phrases in the Wiki would be cool aswell so folk who want to can get a deeper understanding of what the enemy is saying.

I've liked the idea ever since I had an arabic translator on Basrah lol :P

Realistic = people of the team's nationality being able to understand the language

IRL, ppl with english as their first language (or whatever language) don't tend to be found in the PLA

That would be stoopid.

How about an IP filter than only allows players from China to play as PLA. :P

Well, the reason I use the option is that I want to hear what people say when they spot enemies or request a medic. Seeing as those are usually things you need to be able to pick up and acknowledge in a seconds notice, and I didn't have the patience to go through all Arabic and Chinese voice comms and learn them by heart. It really wasn't something I pondered a long time, it was more of a "ah, this should be helpful" thing...

Basically it's just more convenient, and I don't think any significant amount of realism was lost in the process.

However, I will probably go ahead and learn them all sometime, seeing as there are indeed, as pointed out before in this thread, benefits of having different ones for the different factions.

Not always, and I don't really know if that's intentional or bug. Anyway, languages are fine, as every faction should speak their own.

It's not that hard to remember the voices.

If you want to learn them either just play till you get used to it of go to Battlefield 2\mods\pr\common_client.zip\Sound\MEC(chinese). There's description in the file name.

I disagree. It's not realistic, but the functionality of it is. For instance, IRL the bullet more or less goes where the rifle is pointed. But we can't model weapon sway and breathing and fatigue, etc. So we add in deviation.

In the same way, IRL the PLA speaks Chinese and MEC [would] speak Arabic. But a MEC or PLA soldier would understand his countrymen perfectly. There would be no split second hesitation of "was that enemy *infantry* spotted, or enemy *forces* spotted?" At the same time, if they heard an American shout something, they would know that it was an American.

I think that the best way to model this sort of situation is with accents. People think it's not realistic, but really it is.

Does anyone actually listen to what their squadmates yell? I just keep shooting and hope for the best.
