Simple suggestion / feasibility study:
Is it possible to have an ammo check button? One that disengages the 'fireability' of the weapon in order to give us either a view of the bullets left (more realistic) or a blindingly large digital readout of ammunition remaining (easier)
For example: (my keyboard thinking)
Press "q" (and hold)
wait 1-2 seconds - remove weapon firing capability
Get information on ammo remaining
Release "q"
wait 1-2 seconds as you "replace your magazine"
Resume the fight knowing that you have 19 rounds left in your AK-47, instead of reloading and wasting those 19 rounds.
Just a thought, and I'm sorry if this has been suggested before.

I've got one: Reload. Then you know you have a full mag, and it only takes 2-3 seconds. There's plenty of ammo around, and you start with a buttload for your primary weapon, no point in having an ammo check.
Also, in reality most mags don't have an easy way to check number of rounds left. I believe in most NATO STANAG mags only have 1 hole for checking ammo, and that only shows that you have a full mag. You might be able to tell about how much you have by weight, but overall I think soldiers just shoot until empty, or if in doubt they reload.

I think it's a nice idea but in a second everyone will come charging in exclaiming "hard-coded" and that it wouldn't add anything to gameplay. Just reload after every firefight. There's plenty places to get ammo.

I'm sorry, but this would only draw away from reality. The majority of magazines used by military forces will be non-transparent. Removing the magazine and looking at the rounds, you can only seen the top couple and no more. If you have time to remove the mag and look at it, you might as well just spend that time to reload a fresh one.
The only weapons that you would visibly see remaining rounds would be crew-served or LMG's. And in those cases, you just clip a new belt onto the existing belt, without having to unload. And that I would assume is hard-coded.
"If in doubt, Drop it out" - Simply means if you aren't sure you have a good mag, drop it and reload another.
EDIT: In regards to a sniper system, part of your job is keeping track of your ammunition.
The only weapons that you would visibly see remaining rounds would be crew-served or LMG's. And in those cases, you just clip a new belt onto the existing belt, without having to unload. And that I would assume is hard-coded.

In the case of real military forces, you aren't absolutely forced to discard the magazine, espescially if it has some weight still in it- you can always combine magazines if the situation calls for it. I believe THAT is hardcoded, however. If it isn't , then I would definitely push for that instead of an ammo count. In the real military (when using a rifle and not my SAW), I always kept full magazines facing upwards with the brass visible. Any time I changed out magazines, I placed the old ones (either empty or used) brass-down. Once there was a lull in combat and we did our water/ammo/health checks, I would then refill all the empty mags. If we didn't have refreshment ammo, I would empty all of the used mags and combine those rounds back in to make a couple full mags. In regards to your question, don't think of it as your are just throwing those magazines away. Think of it like you are just putting them in a buttpack or something for later use. When you get to an ammo point, you can imagine you are refilling your empty mags.

Simply not realistic, at all. Very few weapons allow the user to check the amount of ammunition available in the magazine at any time (there are a few exceptions, such as on the Japanese Type-89 which has holes to indicate 30 & 20 round ammunition levels, but is considered to be more of a hinderance than help, as it lets **** get in the magazine and cause stoppages.)

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.
