Remove nametags over Friendly soldiers ingame!

Post by Campez »

Hello i have removed the nametags over friendly soldiers ingame, and it looks much more realistic, and you have to look bafore you shoot.

This is how you do:

"C:\Programmer\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\Mods\PRMM_02, and then find the file calld GameLogicInit.con then open it.

It looks like this:

rem *** Put non level specific initializations here ***

rem *** Load multiplayer free camera here
run Common/FreeCamera/Object.con

gameLogic.setDefaultNumberOfTickets 1 500
gameLogic.setDefaultNumberOfTickets 2 500

gameLogic.enableVoHelp 0
gameLogic.supplyDropHeight 50
gameLogic.supplyDropNumSecsToLive 400

NameTags.MaxEnemyDistance 000
NameTags.EnemyTagFadeInTime 999
NameTags.EnemyTagFadeOutTime 1
NameTags.EnemyTagDelayTime 999
NameTags.EnemyDotLimit 1

Make it look like this:

rem *** Put non level specific initializations here ***

rem *** Load multiplayer free camera here
run Common/FreeCamera/Object.con

gameLogic.setDefaultNumberOfTickets 1 500
gameLogic.setDefaultNumberOfTickets 2 500

gameLogic.enableVoHelp 0
gameLogic.supplyDropHeight 50
gameLogic.supplyDropNumSecsToLive 400

NameTags.MaxEnemyDistance 000
NameTags.EnemyTagFadeInTime 999
NameTags.EnemyTagFadeOutTime 1
NameTags.EnemyTagDelayTime 999
NameTags.EnemyDotLimit 1

renderer.drawNametags 0

Hope it was usefull to some off you cuz i saw some talk about it :)

Nametags shoud stay, but only for friendly soldiers and only at a very short distance.

We keep tags on to eliminate friendly fire at short to medium distance and it's worked very well.

possibly at medium distance too, but in that case they should appear with some delay. 4/5 maybe 6 seconds...

As Requiem is hinting at, the devs have been there and done that.
Completely removing the nametags will cause more accidental TKs because it's damned hard to id the soldier that is moving at short distances.
It's one of those times when a compromise has to be done to allow for gameplay.

Make it a serverside option perhaps?

I like nametags... i can more easily notice where my friend is ...
I often play with my friend in 1 squad it helps a lot....
Not realistic? Sure. But... fun is also needed... don't u think?

In real life we would notice.. but in game? easy for accident :-)

If anyone has read books dealing with a military unit (Band of Brothers is a good example) you will find that after a lot of training with eachother troops knew exactly who someone was (even sneaking around at night) just by how they moved. As this isn't possible in BF2, I think that nametags at a reasonable distance are, infact, fairly realistic.

Quoted for truth. Couldn't agree with you more.

Everyone knows what their mate looks like and with the lack of unique models, nametags are a necessary evil.

at a resonable distance i can understand but to see them all the way across a map is annoying!

around you so you can med them and see your squad but you should have to see and verify a target rather than just spam rounds down range.

I think one of the things that draws me to this map is all of your attempts to utilize real world examples to base your decisions from. THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT MOD!!!!

I'm for the removal pure and simple.
Why ? because as it is it makes you rely on the little name tag hovering above their heads rather then the real situation : you have a guy in front of you and in a split second you have to determin if he is friend or foe and that in a stressfull situation, with all the chaos of gun battle.
and you dont always know everyones face or name, in war you move a lot, people die and get replaced by new faces and such.
your only way to make the difference is to see what they are wearing.

ok this will bring a lot of accidental TKs but hey in war it happens a lot as I can read. Its a shame but its human, no matter how well you train a split second is enough to make a mistake you regret the rest of you life.

and on a side note I think having the name tags do bring in themselves accidental TKs, I myself almost shoot a lot of team members just because their name tags failed to show up properly (because of distance and such )
I even got killed once because I though the guy prone in front of me was a friendly, just to get shoot into pieces because in fact the name tag I was seeing was of a team mate behind the wall in a perfect line between us 2..

we rely too much on these kind of things ingame when I dont think in real life we have such luxurys.

your senses should be doing the work: some gun fire is comming from the top of a building above you, right now you can check your minimap or just look up and you magicaly see blue dots or name tags.
as in real life you have to recognise the weapon type by its sound or to have payed attention to where your mates have taken position.
Being aware is what your supposed to do all the time, not being lasy and rely on all this 'magic' stuff given too us.

well this was just my 'short' point of view on this ;Op

I agree.

There is definately too much reliance on "magic stuff", that and game exploits ... but thats a whole new topic entirely :)

solodude23 wrote:Yeah, very true what you state. I don't even bother to look at friendlies because without even looking to see what they are wearing AT ALL you can easily see the nametag floating above their head. That happened to me as well when thee was a friendly behind a wall directly on the other side of an enemy from me. So I didn't evne look at him at all as I saw the nametag over his head, but like you said it was just the friendly behind him. He slaughtered me after that :(
LOL ya the worst in this was that i would have had time too kill him.I had in fact just spawned, saw the guy, disregard him and killed a support who was comming in his back, I turn back to him (like "hehe saved your butt buddy") and he shoots me in the head :o /

very frustrating but also very funny.
War is hell isn't it.
