CAS, once again I am not sure what you are trying to describe, and I think you misunderstand my suggestion. The game is perfectly capable of displaying something on the HUD that is not a "lock-on" icon. Take for example when you fly a jet and see a friendly aircraft. An icon is displayed, but you cannot lock a missile onto it. Unless a DEV corrects me otherwise, it would stand to reason then, that the engine can be programmed to display a passive icon over all enemy vehicles within a certain range from the helicopter.
Also, recall if you will, flying an F-15 in vanilla BF2. From the pilot station, all enemy tanks show up on the HUD as green boxes, however you cannot lock onto these boxes as the gunner controls the Laser Guided rockets. The squares appear for the pilot only so he can see the enemy tanks and direct his plane towards them.
I am advocating the same system for the Chopper. To actually lock on and fire a missle at an enemy tank he must first point his reticle at the desired target, wait for a laser lock-on, and THEN fire.
