It is possible to edit them, but its quite a hazzle. For starters you should visit the gotfrag forums and try to dig up the stock gameplay files (which contains all flag versions in one editor file). This is only if you plan on using the same things though, you can always make it from scratch.

To open a stock map, copy it to your working mod (you should NEVER be working in the original files), extract both client and server (then you can remove these zips). Now you can open it, but you wont have pretty terrain textures. You dont really need the textures either if you are only changing gameplay data and lightmaps (difficult to see the results of the latter though).

To get terrain, open the terrain data file as txt (hugeass load). Near the beginning is the detail maps listed, write them down and set in the editor textures as listed). To get good colormaps/detailmaps, you have to open them in Photoshop or similar, then rescale them (to 1024 I believe) and place in the Editor directory. In the end, you should have something similar like a custom map file directory.

Its quite a bit of work to make it fully editor openable. And there might be a better way (to be honest I hope there is). I just know that I've done it this way.

Sidenote: If you want to use it as a different name (for example Mashtuur Thunder, this map has ALOT of extra terrain for tank battles!!!) just use the save as function. If you do it manually there's a crapload of search paths to change.
