High Ping. How do I know if I'm going to get kicked?

Post by BeerHunter »

There are some servers that:
a) I would like to try playing on (ie iGi and some others in Europe and Australia).
b) that will kick if your ping is too high.

My problem is that I'm in rural Northern Alberta on wireless high speed.Wireless by default seems to occasionally wonder off into the boonies and my ping will skyrocket from a comfortable 140 or so up to >600 for a few seconds then settle back down again.

I've found that sometimes , when this happens , PB will kick me with a message that my AVERAGE ping (???) is too high while other servers seem to be much more tolerant so I can simply wait out the ping spike.

I'm wondering what the server setting is and can it be viewed in XFire or Qtracker so I can either not play there or at least be prepared ahead of time.

BTW - in case your wondering why I'd play on overseas servers , it's simply because from my location they don't really ping that much higher than servers down in the southern US.

PB doesn't measure average ping over an entire session I believe - it's done over the last X number of seconds; hence why if your ping goes up for a minute you end up dropped, even if your average ping over an entire round is a steady 150-160ms.

I'm not aware of any way of checking Kick-on-Ping status but then again, I've not really looked for it.

Maybe posting in the Server Discussion section of the forums and asking admins to post their server's status WRT this issue would yield some results.
