Clarification needed on AA lock tone
Do aircraft get a warning tone when a missile is locked? I understood it to only alert when a missile is fired.
Was playing earlier on T&T Server and was flying Havoc against Cobra
I spotted cobra in distance and got lock on, he instantly turns 90 degrees to his left and sees me, I fire twice at him with definate lock and both missiles miss, I drop flares, he launches 2 x missiles and blows us out of the sky.
We swap pilots and exact same thing happens again.
We (2 of us) then go on foot with 2 x SA-7's to get this guy and find something strange.
As soon as either of us lock onto him he drops flares and I loose lock (I thought they got no warning untill missile was launched)
If a missile was launched with a good lock from one of us during the time he was recharging flares it would miss every time
If a missile was launched with a good lock and he drops flares as the missile was on it's way to him it would miss every time.
If we got lock with an empty tube and pressed fire, he would drop flares instantly - as if pressing fire triggered the drop.
We must have tried about 10 SA-7's and 4 x sidewinders and not one hit him
in the end we had to bring a Vodnik and rely on old fashioned lead to do the job (only managed to wound him then the round ended tho.)

Was it yesterday? Cuz if i am right you where at the ridge at the US mainbase with SA-7's.
every time i was heading to the mainbase i got locked and instantly dropped flares.
And its true about the lock tone with chopper vs chopper, when you locked him he hears a tone it doesn't matter if you fired or not. Also i avoid 4 AA missiles without flairs dropped

I have had no trouble taking out BH after BH and such with the Havok. Just fire the second you lock. I am in the proccess of seeing different ways of firing, if I can fire before and hit etc...

"oh, they're fire and forget all right...they're fired then they forget where the target is"

Missile are proximity fuzed to make up for network lag.
*Edit: The missiles don't work well enough to justify the number of flares that aircraft carry, combined with the lock warning. I've made some more improvements to them to get a reasonable hit rate.

As a result of reading this thread I went out with the handheld AA and a friendly pubber with an LMG for ammo and sat where a couple of BH's passed frequently. Heres the footage I acquired
