Hardware vs. Software
Apparently the difference between Hardware High EAX and Software High EAX is the ability to hear outside your tank or APC. DID YA KNOW?

Im not sure you can run EAX via software at all? But yes there is a huge difference when running Hardware EAX vs. Software High - it's night and day really. Sound is much brighter and crispier on EAX Ultra High vs. Software High. As far as being able to hear sound on Hardware that you can't on Software, I'm not sure since I've never really tried or ran BF2 on Software.

The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.

HAHA!! Fools i run on ultra high with my sound blaster x-fi professional sound card!!
The difference for me is that the gun shots drag out more and you hear the echo much more crisp. Other than that and few differences in the sound of a couple of things its not that serious. On vBF2 i can really tell the difference. Dont know why that is.

I have a Creative X-fi xtrememusic (it came with the pc). After setting the card on game mode, which is required if you want to use Creative X-Fi Ultra High on BF2, I noticed several differences.
1. You could hear tanks and APCs, while you yourself are in a tank or APC (Don't know if this is true for Creative X-Fi Ultra High. I discovered this in Hardware high.)
2. When you fire your weapon on the ground or a wall next to you, you hear the gunshot and the sound of the bullet hitting the object. The sound you hear is the sound given off by the substance i.e. metal or sand.
3. Big Problem. In Hardware mode and Creative X-Fi mode, I cannot hear the sounds behind me. So, for instance, today I had a Metal Gear Solid sequence where a technical was chasing my Landrover as I was shooting the 50 cal back, I couldn't hear the engine of the Landrover. It was completely silent. Also, when I was sniping today, I saw 50 cal tracers coming from behind me, but I couldn't hear them unless I turned in their direction of source. This was not the case in software mode.
EDIT: My set-up was on 4 speakers while I only had two. Problem fixed.
4. On my locally created games, Qinling seems to have an issue with the water. Sometimes I can hear the water from base. I'll see if there are other problems in game later.

On Qinling, you are better of without ultra-high sound if I recall correctly, something to do with the water like you said.
And Ironcomatose, perhaps because the sounds in general in PR are way better, there's a less noticeable difference? ...not sure if that makes sense, but it's 6 am, so it does to me.

Oh,nice
I was wondering why Dirtboy overtook you cause first we were the chasing car
He told me that's cause you had stopped.
And we though the chase was over and stopped so Dirtboy could give me a bandage as I was hurt and at that time you came shooting us.Dirtboy quickly jumped back in the car and started but you blew the car up.Somehow I managed to hide on the roadside and survived.
That was a great chase though
