How many Vista users here?
I just got a new gaming rig and of course it came with Vista. And it took me about 2 weeks to figure out all the things I needed to do to get BF2 running in it.
Like it or not, Vista is the future of PC's (and I hate it). My undertanding is that as of Feb this year you can no longer buy a PC with XP preinstalled, and Feb next year XP will not be supported at all anymore. Further more, there are already products out there that cannot be used with any OS less than Vista.
I'm just wondering how many others are out there using Vista or are you using XP with a partitioned HD or perhaps you just tossed the preinstalled Vista and reformatted with XP?
If there are enough of us, is it worth asking for a dedicated Vista support forum here at PRM?

I will not be upgrading to Vista until a game requires me too.

Not really an opion for a lot of people, I could have built my own, but for the money I found it was not worth it to get that extra 5fps out of a game. Beside, if you go laptop your choices are really narrow.Deadfast wrote:Just don't buy a pre-built.
I knew there was going to be one ;PBesides, you forgot Linux![]()

See ive been on XP for years n then i went n fried my motherboard one day n was without a pc for a while. Hell i even used a mac for 2months till i could afford to buy a new pc...i know its terrible but wat could i do.
I recently bought a new pc n have upgraded it with a nice nvidia card n some sound cards too. Its on vista os n it was my first time using it, even now im still fiddling with it to work out all the odds and ends to it.
It is a good package, but it just makes it alot harder to do what you want in terms of changing things like you could do so easily with XP.
I get the feeling we are all goin to hav to resort to it at some stage as im sure microsoft will want us to...

I decided to embrace the future and recently installed Vista 64-bit. Luckily BF2 worked for me without problems, I don't see any notable performance difference too, and there are drivers for all my stuff, including the Copperhead :]. I keep a partition with XP just in case (like when recently I had to use the "testdisk" utility to fix something on another disk).

Few days ago I've changed my rig and installed Vista 64 Ultimate.
Thanks to musp3r and his installation guide (https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... steps.html), I'm amazed with my new computer performance, as well as with Vista's features and capabilities.
Vista is, what I can see so far, one great OS for advanced users (who likes to setup every single option of his computer work in some intelligent and very detailed way) and "not so" advanced users which likes to see their computer being colorful and very simple to use.
I don't have any performance problems at all, my rig is simply flying
System specs:
Intel core 2 Quad Q6600 OC-ed to 2,7 GHz
2 x 2 Gb DDR2 800 MHz OC-ed to 900 MHz
MB Gigabyte P35C-DS3P
nVidia 7600 GT (have to wait few more days for 9600GT)

Vista ultimate 64 bit here. No problem with PR whatsoever, apart from Random CTDs every no and again. Have had very little problems, its my first own SO install and I prefer it over xp, also 4GB of RAM able to fully use is great.

I have a hard time believing there is no preformance penalty with Vista, as it is so much larger than XP. I'm wondering if any of you dual booters have run a benchmark on the same machine to see if there's a difference. WIC Demo has a decent benchmark feature BTW, if you're interested in trying it with a free benchmark.
How many Vista users are running BF2 in XP compatability mode? I am, not sure if I need to.

Don't know man, I (and a lot of other pleople here) was not the least bit interested in 2142, and PRM is not likely to move to that platform which would be the only reason I'd get it. I'm so sick of EA...'[uKm wrote:SCO/ENG-OLI123;621564'] when BF3 comes out nxt year and

I am nauseated by EA also, but with the advent of dx10 all the game developers are gonna move over- not just EA.Liquid_Cow wrote:Don't know man, I (and a lot of other pleople here) was not the least bit interested in 2142, and PRM is not likely to move to that platform which would be the only reason I'd get it. "Upgrade or Die" has always been the reality of pc gaming, and always will be.
But I guess we'll see, it might not be financially viable given the market to move to dx10 yet- since gamers such as youself may want to stick with dx9 for a while longer.

I run GNU/Linux. Gentoo with Gnome + compiz fusion + awn

some of the features of compiz fusion for those who don't know YouTube - Compiz Fusion Development #2
Personally I think its miles ahead of vista, there attempt to bring 3d to the desktop is mediocre at best.
Runs games good as well, Doom 3, ET:QW, EVE Online, Darwinia and Defcon I have as well.
I can run BF2 on GNU/Linux as well but to be honest it doesn't run as well as other games.
