It appears that Dice is in fact working on BF3: 2142

I think this sounds cool. Even if they have stupid mechs, there could be a great PR mod for it! I would love to design some future weapons for it, as I already have some designs which the modern militarys would never adopt due to the coolness factor being too high. Even if they still use projectiles, I love projectile weapons. We could make some pretty sweet vehicles, too.

Yeah, ET: Quake Wars looks as though its gonna be the definitive futuristic/sci-fi war game. I realize it has "aliens," but still, it looks to mostly be about objective-based infantry & vehicle combat, so there's really no need for a BF version...Eden wrote:They wont be ameking it. Why would they make a ripoff of et: quake wars? its pointless not to mention a waste of money on EA's part.

Ironically, you know the first thing people are going to do is make a WWII mod out of it
It does seem the next logical step, and I could see it being fun. I'm a bit skeptical about ET:Quake Wars, simply because of how Quake plays out. I tried the Quake IV demo's multiplayer mode, and of course, it was arcade deathmatch to the Nth degree. Add vehicles, and what do you get? Well, lets see-- you add vehicles to Unreal Tournament 2003, and you don't get a game similar to BF2, but you get Unreal Tournament 2004-- deathmatch with vehicles!
The point I'm making here, is that BF and Quake are two very different franchises, and they both play very different. I would much rather play BF2142 than ET:QuakeWars, because, compared to Quake or Unreal Tournament-- BF2 is realistic. It's a much more tactical approach, what with going prone, iron sights, etc.
As for the video (and I saw it), I'm betting it's not likely of BF2142, and if it is, I'm betting it's not ingame.

Yes, we now basically use extremely upgraded technology(infantry) from slightly over a hundred years ago. But the way I think of it is that if we are only using the techonology that stems from the brand new stuff of say, 1860 which would be repeating firearms that use a closed shell rather than packed powder. If this trend continues that means that 136 years from now their standard will be the extemely modified/upgraded versions of the brand new weapons technologies we have today.dawdler wrote:The progress isnt so phenomenal in terms of weaponry, really. We are mainly using the same type of weaponry designed in early 1900, just better materials, more streamlined and much higher quality. Remember the M1911? It was still in use by US armed forces not too many years ago!
Besides, who knows how many nuclear wars blasted us back to the renaissance between now and 2142?![]()
If we're just now making the first smart bullets and unmanned vehicles perhaps that is where our war technology is going, and honestly I see this as our best option as it doesn't cost us our lives. A somewhat new techonology is stealth, and I see us upgrading not only air and sea vehicles, but land ones also to make radar detection useless. We are just now making rail guns that can hurl bullets at extreme speeds and at extreme rates(I saw a crazy prototype weapon that could shoot over 1,000,000 bullets/minute) and I see these weapons replacing our standard gunpowder powered ones. Even lasers are a possiblity in a role where stealth was not at all an issue. I see tanks, like the great battleships, becoming obsolete in their roles and fazed out because other things can fill the role better.
This is but a few things that could be used, and it is correct to think that we will make new breakthroughs comparable to the invention automobiles. aircraft, computers, and nuclear fission/fusion and these(outside space technology) are impossible to immagine. For these, obviosly, the writers of the game could get creative. This said, I highly doubt that DICE thought of what they should put into their game with this reasoning; rather, like I said earlier, they probably just did it on a basis of "oh, that's cool" and "I like that."
As for the whole technology plateau, the last time I think we had one of those was the dark ages. The only reason for this was that people were not writing their discoveries down and they were being lost almost as soon as they were found. Without working with the progress of others we are forced to re-start ourselves from scratch making it impossible to make breakthroughs. This is why our society is, technologically, growing at an exponential rate. With the internet theories and discovories are almost instantaneosly shared and worked on by the talent of the whole world. A teacher of mine shared with the class a fact, when he was our age the worlds knowledge doubled every ten years, now we double our knowledge every two years. The only way to stop our progress is to destroy not only this communication, but to destroy the information itself which would quite an undertaking. I guess if we finally blew up the world then perhaps we could easily see what we would have 136 years from now, but I from what I saw BF 2142 wasn't post apocolyptical

Sidenote: Quake Wars is very different from what BF2142 probably would be. Unless mechanical aliens invade earth just about then to suck out our life fluids.

Very true, Advanced Capability Electric Systems (ACES) is a .mil page on how the US Navy intends to have rail-guns replace the old 16 inch guns on destroyers by I think 2011 or so.
Mazes.pdf is a .mil document on the XM 307 OCSW air bursting grenade machine gun (which I support the developement of)
Lastly that I can think of right now is a project kind of like the mid-80s Space Defense Initiate "Project Star Wars". MDA Link is a .mil site on a modified 747 with a chemical laser in the body and a reflector mirror turret in the nose of the plane to direct the beam. The project is aiming to be able to have these modded 747s in theater to shoot down enemy short range ballistic missiles such as the SCUDs Iraq launched at Kuwait. Also, "afit-gae-eny-00m-11.pdf" is a pdf document that discusses the "Computational fluid dynamics for drag reduction of an aircraft laser turret" - again on a .mil host...
If you guys wanna look up any other futuristic stuff or present day military weapons, when you search Google, use the "Advanced search" which puts site:.whatever in the search bar, so basically search (ex) "rail-gun site:.mil" - alternatively you could use .gov, net, org, or any other top level domain you can think of - in the .mil and .gov case, it practically guarantees the info being correct - if it isnt, "blame the govt'"...

What you guys are forgetting is that they atleast don;t nake up pay extra to go online or anything. Would you rather be paying $15 a month just to go on a non-ranked mod server? (
) I like their work, and they are also working on other games as others have pointed out, I myself like vanilla bf2 alot, but I also like the more realistic version you've created.

Wow, I am really in the minority in terms of who things this is cool. When I first saw that I was thinking it was unbelievably awesome.
But really, who did not see this coming. DICE cornered themselves when they made BF2. They already had done WWII and Vietnam. The only things left (following the US-centric BF series) would have been Korea, in which many of the weapons were still very similar, or maybe a fictional Soviet Russia versus the United States scenario. Before WWI, there really is not much interesting going on (in my opinion). I have no interest in attacking someone with swords and spears, or taking a minute to reload my rifle.
So what is next to do? A fictional future with cool new weapons and vehicles. Ideally I would also love to have a space combat portion of the game to go along with it because there are really no space combat sims at the moment. (X3 is more of a business/military management with some space combat thrown in. I also still drool at the near impossible chance of a future Star Wars space sim, I am in need of some X-Wing flying goodness

I dont think it need space combat, regular air combat will be enough. Wouldnt hurt though. Someone should recreate original Tie Fighter in as an online FPS action game (ie a BF2 mod). Complete with AWESOME gourad shading, of course!!!
Looking at the bright side, it'll probably be the first BF2 mod that reach 300 fps on average.

be cool if they had stuff like in Cowboy Bebop - the Swordfish with its airbrakes/super turn radius and plasma cannon, and the Redtail - the little pod fighter with dual chainguns and revolver style missle/rocket launchers

At this point, I'm tired of arcade gameplay, I'd want realism. If they can pull that off without problems in BF2142 I'll be a happy camper enough, even with insane weapons and vehicles. Space battles would be sweet.
Most importantly though, they'de better have realistic physics and a destructable enviroment. There is no excuse as to why they wouldn't.

be friggin AWESOME if you could say, in a space battle, take your fighter and blow a hole clear through a capital ship (with enough explosives) and fly through it - itd be... a fun test of reflexes...
also, I want some zero g maneuvers where somebody is pursueing me, I can gun my engines to get some speed (so he doesnt shoot me), cut the burners, then do a 180 flying backwards (with the burners still off), shoot my salvo at the guy, finish up the turn so I'm facing my original direction and hit the burners again... theres already so many space combat sims out there, but none of the ones I've seen take 0g conditions into account like this - all most of em are is really just modded terrestrial flight game engines...

hadnt watched the video yet, now that I have, looks kinda like current BF2 with helos and infantry and add in some oldschool Mechwarrior (or even older - who remembers Starseige?, which is the universe that Starseige: Tribes, Tribes 2, Tribes Aerial Assualt, and Tribes Vengence are based on)

I would be amazed if they could actually pull of space combat in any somewhat real matter. The big things that most games mess up are inertia, and the fact that you can keep accelerate non stop to ubeleivable speeds. Also, I'd like it if they would make it so an extreme manuever would either knock you out, or simply kill you.
