Remodel Insurgent Radios

Post by OverwatchX »

I did a quick search and didnt see this posted elsewhere although it probably has..

Current situation:
One of the things I think that gives modernized, professionally equipped armies an edge over rag-tag militias or roving bands of insurgents must be communications. Currently, the mod affords that same benefit to insurgents by essentially giving them press-to-talk headset radio capabilities.

In Al Basrah for example, it seems a little odd to me that the insurgents would be running around the city communicating via headset radios. I wonder if insurgents should be limited to other communication options or restrictions.

A Possible Solution:
Insurgents are given a HANDHELD RADIO item in their loadout. In order to both hear radio traffic and communicate, they must have this in their hand. They would still be able to shout comms from the comm-rose to those in the immediate vicinity who could hear it but it wouldn't be broadcasted over the radio to all unless, again, they were holding the radio. The radio could also be modded with sound to add in a little static laced with the players mic to give it that cheaper, lower quality, grassroots, militia feel.

Why change it?
Realism. The same logic that applies in this game towards kits and weapon features and loadouts, should be applied to comms as well.

Final thoughts:
I think playing an insurgent on maps like Al Basrah should add something unique; it should pose additional unique challenges. This option doesnt remove comms, it just makes it more realistic.

I know that some people will say this will kill the mod or gameplay but honestly, I've played entire games of PR where the squad I was on talked very little or someone didnt even have a mic. I've been in games as an insurgent in Al Basrah where the squad I was in hardly ever (if ever) talked. This forced me to listen to the type, direction, and amount of gunfire coming from a part of town to react to it and head off that way...much like Id argue some rag-tag group of fighters would do. They would key on sounds of battle and vehicles and look for comrades running in certain directions.

If the insurgents in this mod are considered to be equipped with headsets like the professional army attacking it, then I guess this idea is pointless.

I know this suggestion could be viewed as radical and some would find it hardcore. But its just another "realism" modding idea similiar to those already implemented in this great mod.
Realism and fun aren't mutually exclusive.

Well, if not VOIP it will be TS.

For now, lets just say they are using mobile phones

I think this is a fantastic idea, it's unfortunate that it can't work out.

Maybe if you don't have the radio out, you would automatically transmit a lot of static, preferably hearing it as well, so that all everyone hears is static when using VOIP but not having the radio out. If your radio is out you can send and receive clearly (except to/from people without their own radios out), if your radio is not out you cannot be understood or understand anyone.

That could even work... maybe...

But then again, TS would still be a way to "cheat".

That would be a good idea but that would just promote insurgent running around like chickens with their head cut off more than usual. I have had Sl say do whatever you want we're insurgents just run around and shoot stuff or something like that.

Take a pick, what would you prefer? A handset for the Insurgents or the M4 series of weapons, which are nearly completed and will reduce the time until 0.8 is released? It's all about priority.

So 0.8 is contingent on the completion of the M4 models? I sincerely doubt that. Yes, that will be part of it, but there's plenty of other stuff that I'm sure the DEVs would like to see ingame. Also, a patch came out TODAY. I don't expect .8 until the summer at the earliest, and I don't see any reason why we should think it will be sooner.
