Helicopter Physics

Post by TJYoung80234 »

I was playing the mod last night on a local server I started, then also in Singleplayer. One thing that bugged me severely was how hard it is to go verticle (up and down). If you slow down, to drop down, you'll hover in place for 3 seconds or so. Then when you start to drop, you literally DROP. You could easily damage your helicopter or kill yourself just because of the physics.

It should be more like Vanilla... where you slow down (decrease speed) and naturally drop down at a steady pace. That's how a real helo works... you're able to stop suddenly in mid-air, then drop as fast or slow as you want.

The way the mod is, if you stop you hover. If you decrease speed you hover until the speed drops enough where you fall down towards the ground. This makes for impossible shots into hangars or other low structures because you're likely to hit the ground.

Can this be fixed?

That all depends on the chopper you're flying. The Ah-1z cobra actually lifts quite well(which can be a problem in itself). You were probably using the mi-28 Havok which doesn't lift so well. I've been in the cockpit of either of these, but I'm assuming that in real life, the Havok might have somewhat poor vertical lift vs. mass ratio compared to the cobra.

I agree that the poor lift can be a problem, but only really when you try to do insane BF2 style manuevers that might not be possible(or at least not wise) in real life.

I was referring to the Cobra... should have mentioned that. The Chinese/MEC helo seemed fine to me. The lift isn't so much the issue... it's landing/decreasing elevation that seems a bit off to me.

I would like to see a complete rewrite of the chopper handling. Probably have to wait for "BF5: Bordering near believable"

The handling isn't too bad... pretty lose, but I like it. The drop in elevation though is bugging me beyond BELIEF. I can't make those hover shots like I used to.

Oh, and what THE HELL is up with the Chinese/MEC chopper getting 64 missiles while the Cobra only has 14. That's a bit unbalanced. :|

I find the physics absolutely fine. I'm rly not sure wat your on about.

Although i do fly around like a madman, i get the job done, to be homest with my style of piloting, the physics of the Cobra suit me well. :)
