UH-1N Huey: a classic, if slow, helo.

Not a huge complaint, but the differences between the Blackhawk and Huey are quite noticeable. First and foremostly, the former has mounted weapons, the latter does not. While unarmed helos are not a new concept, see the Merlin, a chopper I adore flying (when it doesn't lag), this creates a polarized situation for the allies. Currently, with the exception of Kashan, where the Blackhawk is still in use, British and US helos are unarmed and MEC and Chinese helos still have side door guns.

Naturally, as some will point out, the Huey and Merlin are almost always on maps where the opposing force has no transport helicopters of their own, making this situation acceptable. Nevertheless, while the Merlin might be able to get away with flying around unarmed in real life, the AH-1N most should most definately have side door gunners as it does in real life.

A less noticeable but perhaps more important point is that the Huey is considerably less powerful than the Blackhawk. It takes longer to spin up, accelerates less quickly, and gains altitude at a rate approaching that of a small party balloon. I have no problem with these differences, as long as someone can assure me that they are realistic in relative proportion to the blackhawk.

Failing that, I believe the Huey should receive a slight performance tweak, nothing serious mind you. I would decrease spin up time by 15%, and increase lift rate by 25%. Top speed and acceleration are fine as is, the blackhawk was unrealistically fast.

Why do you think that?, the Merlin IRL has a tail gun on the loading ramp, i see no problem with the Huey being unarmed makes a change to the wineing of the M134s all the time.

The reason, as far as I can tell, is because there were no mounts modeled for the huey's weapon systems. It was going to be a choice between no huey, or a huey without weapon mounts. I am perfectly happy, if not estatic, that they chose the latter. Its nice to my favorite chopper crusising the skies.

as a player i am completely against transport helicopters having guns, both when im FLYING the helicopter and when im a passenger in a helicopter, i would prefer it unarmed over armed almost every time.

Why? Cause the people who hop in the gun usually STAY in the gun, instead of doing something useful, like lets say, PUT THEIR BOOTS ON THE GROUND AND DEFEND/ATTACK AN OBJECTIVE.

However Im sure others will disagree but thats just my opinion as a player... and its 10 times worse with the minigun that players cant control themselves and shoot randomly all over the map (and usually inside the friendly air base often injuring teammates and making everyone on the ground thoroughly pissed at the helicopter, although its no fault of the pilot)

I totally agree with you on this one fuzzhead. Guns on transport helos make people stupid, I'm not entirely sure why, but they inevitably make helicopters get killed faster and more often.

I prefer all transport choppers without guns. Too many dumb pub players, and those guns do very little.

I both agree.....and respectfully disagree.

With the new suppressive fire tweak....it would be very usefull in keeping some of the RPGs and AA from being able to take aim.
This is how, in my experience, most mg's were used on transport helos anyway.

But I do agree for all the reasons already stated.
In game they are missused....smacktards sit on them with no regard to the fact that they are announcing the helos already loud arrival!

I think it would be awesome to see the new Hueys working in tandem with the Cobras providing defensive support.
It would be the "dogs balls" to see a huey landing to drop off squads while the Cobras circled in ready to strike!

(Brits....did I use the term "dogs balls" correctly?)

thing to getting used to is the long climb and it sucks at diving. I would suggestion of the view, basically too much cockpit, less view, for instance i can't see easily where i land.

I don't believe I've ever seen "dogs balls" used in a positive manner before....

But you make a good point about the suppressing fire against RPGs and other AA.

I agree that there is a tendency for players to abuse Transport Helicopter mounted weapons. However, understand that by removing (or in this case, failing to add) these assets, we are detracting, not adding, to the realism of the game. Military transport helicopters would never enter a combat zone without some kind of defensive weaponry.

That being said, I can accept the lack of mounted weapons as long an effort is made to ensure that both the MEC and PLA are afforded the same courtesy. Fair is fair.

@Fuzzhead: any opinion on the handling characteristics? Warm up time? Climb rate?

Well actually there are still instances where US or other countries enter a zone with unarmed helo's. Take the little bird for example, they rely on others to help them out even if they use it as a Hunter Killer Team, the little bird is still the loach.
The huey would be great to have side mounted weapons, but make the guns only usable by pilots so those Transport squads can keep 1 pilot and 1 gunner (theres already a copilot seat) That way squad can tag along, and only the pilots can fire. This would help to keep things suppressed or clear an LZ of light targets, or cover a retreating squad back to the bird.

I would otherwise agree that normally people get in the choppers and rush to the miniguns just to light them up. Most of the time this is just because people like the sound effects and to see the ground go boom. Other people are smart and use it well to bust open an LZ.
Also who ever said the blackhawk is unrealistically fast, its really not... Lets just say the Chinook can move faster than the UH-60 does in game. Also a side suggestion for the brits, add in the Lynx light utility helo, great bird, fast agile, and similar looking to the Huey.

I dont understand the problem, improvisation is everything in war and in simulation of war. Just pick up AUTOMATIC RIFLEMAN KIT, thats what i did(we build helo-tranport squad i was the defensive part in it)it is MUCH more fun if its just a transport chopper. I would prefare M60 of course , but SAW is also a nice machine gun. PLS leave Huey alone lol, its ok atm. maby the "=marines=" brighter one coloured ,it seems to me kind of shy and old.
