It appears that Dice is in fact working on BF3: 2142

What about Starseige which is what Starseige: Tribes, Tribes 2, and the whole rest of the Tribes games are based on? that was IMO a pretty good Mech sim...

What we need (me anyway) is (again almost an oxymoron) a truly realistic Star Wars sim. One with true hyperspace and navigation, ability to free roam, a dynamic campaign... Basically I want the X-Wing series, mixed with the high quality siminess of F4 (well maybe not that much, more along the lines of LOMAC simplicity but still sorta complicated) and with a dash of Freelancer/X3 exploration and open-endedness. *drool* I can dream.MonkeyNutz wrote:You know what hasn't been done, realistic Sci Fi (almost an oxymoron).
What the world also needs, is a MECHWARRIOR 5!. I miss the days when I was able to walk around in my Summoner/Thor, blasting stuff to smithereens with a huge Autocannon, PPC, and varying missile types. A Battlemech sim with todays tech and graphics would be unbelievably cool. Walking around in something as tall as a small office building stomping on tanks, and battling it out with other Battlemechs in the city while the office buildings around you shatter and melt from cannon and laser fire. *more drool* I'm going to short circuit my keyboard if I keep thinking about these two dream games.
Too bad Microsoft owns the Battletech license. If a new mech game comes out it will be guranteed to be X360 exclusive, not to mention dumbed down (MechAssault anyone?). And LucasArts seems to have no motivation to revisit the old Star Wars sims. The only thing even close to a Star Wars sim is Galaxies. But Galaxies is based on leveling up and getting better guns than the next guy rather than standard, massive sim-like battles. Not to mention that when playing JTL in Galaxies, something just doesn't feel right. It's like theres no soul or spirit to it. Just a whole bunch of Star Wars stuff all in the same place.
The only cool Star Wars space combat right now is Battlefront 2. Which does an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere of Star Wars combat. Even if it is very simple arcade style combat. You know come to think of, loving so much fictional and sci-fi stuff would make it seem like I shouldn't be on the PRMM forums doesn't it?

but I thought Lucas Arts supposedly supported mods that promoted Star Wars, or is that just the good ones (shut down the crappy ones before they tarnish the Star Wars name more)?

Chances are that the decision to make a futuristic version of BF is a direct response to Quake Wars. That game looks amasing, however I will hold fire on judgement until I see what it can do, once bitten twice shy and all that. BF2142 could be a great game for all we know, lets face it DICE pissed a lot of folk off when BF2 was released, however the latest patch did go quite some way to giving me back some faith in game developers actually listening to the customer. Only time will tell.

I didn't play BF vietnam, but that game seemed pretty bad. Battlefield 1942 was a revolutionary game, it's kind of hard to top that. Battlefield 2 is a damn good game though, and nobody can take that away from DICE. What ruined it was not even the bugs, but the patching. There is no better way to piss people off then try to fix something and break it even more. I'm not sure what their excuses are for the first patch as well as this one, but I doubt that its anything that excuses from this situation. The attitude that is shown in this is "we don't care enough about our fans enough to test our patches." Even if this is untrue, it's still a slap in the face to have my game screwed up by a "fix." Another great downfall of BF2 is the community itself. If you wish to play a game where 90% seem to be trying to piss you off look no further than BF2. Whether it's tking for vehicle, tking over something very petty, simply tking to tk, or just being immature douchebags it can be found in vanilla BF2. The game would be better ten fold(and it is on a good server) when the players are mature, reasonable, polite people.
If DICE can make a non glitchy game with good patching with the same atmosphere as BF2 can have, they'll make a damn good game. If not... well... honestly I'd still probably try it.

Precisely. And thats another reason why I enjoy PR so much.
But even if you get a great, stable bug free game that still leaves the human element. When playing vanilla with a friend it takes us 5-6 servers until we find one with a lower than average amount of fools.
You forgot the instant tk punish. Its like these prats have a script or something.

"tking for vehicle"
did you play BF 1942 vanilla? that was the worst of em all as far as tking for vehicles went - ESPECIALLY planes... every time you got a prop plane first, you went to take off and the ******** would have your planes health down by half with the subguns, assault rifles, and BARs - god man, I play with at least some teamwork so my team can win, obviously these kinds of tkers never thought other people can do more damage or at least just as much as their sorry arse...
most of that shit stopped when you played the Desert Combat mod, but you could ALWAYS tell when some noob arse hole just installed the mod coming over from vanilla because its always those guys that were doing that kind of tking in DC

'[R-CON wrote:Why?!']True, BF2 already has the perfect flight model for an X-Wing game. All it needs is the model, which First Strike has a terrific model of.
im talking about BF3: 2142
First Strike is just 'another' Star Wars mod waiting to get legal action from Lucas Arts. They will then vanish along with all the other 'Star Wars' mods.
perhaps recreating BF2 on BF3 engine would be fun?

I think BF-2142 will be a good game. It probably won't be much like BF2 at all, it'll probably include some good Mech combat, like Mechwarrior 4, but a lot less arcade-ey. Which is good, I got bored of MW4 because it didn't seem very realistic at all. I actually liked Mechwarrior 3 a lot better (especially with Pirates Moon), mainly because it seemed much more of a simulator than an arcade game. Even though it was released back in '99, when I was still using my Windows 98 with a 3gig hard drive. (I remember I had to uninstall half the programs on that computer just to clear up enough hard drive space so I could install the game!)
