Another MEC tank.
Chieftain tank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Was just reading up on some tanks and I think this one would be nice for the MEC to have as they don't have much different from what they had in nilla.
What do you guys think?

There's nothing modern and non-Russian that we could use? We don't want a force that's supposedly up to par with NATO using British or Iranian hand-me-down MBTs, do we?
Also, it's been reasoned that Iran isn't even part of the MEC, as they're vehement opponents of the Arabs - but that's another point altogether.

The Persians have always tried to differentiate themselves from the Arabs. The largest thing they really have in common, the largest of very few things, is a belief in Islam.
Shared religion doesn't guarantee an alliance. For example, the Sunnis and Shiites believe in the same Allah and the same Koran, and yet they kill one another on a daily basis. The same concept applies to the relationship between Iran and the Arab world: they may share a common faith, but that does not make them allies.
Back to the tank, my point was that if we're going to model this tank (which I don't recommend), it won't be an Iranian model; why would the Persians donate armor to a society they don't particularly like?

Iranians are Persians, a different ethnic group with a different language, who are predominantly followers of the Shia sect of Islam. Arabs are mostly of the Sunni sect.

To call an Iranian an Arab is like calling a Scilian an Italian, to call a Scott an Englishman, or a Turk an Arab. They are Muslim, but not Arabic. The split between Shia and Sunni is akin to the Protestant split in the Christian world (its based on who they believe the rightful heir and leader of the Muslim faith should be after Mohammed's death).DeltaFart wrote: THEY ARE ARABS!
I would propose, that since this is a near future army and it would have to be built up fairly fast they would purchase fairly modern Chinese weapon systems. Even Saddam's most modern tanks were Chinese. The Chinese have the capability to sell an army's worth of armor pretty quick, and would be more than happy to sell to a weathly Arabic state if it meant a PITA for the USA.

Where do you get the T-72 from? As far as I know, the MEC utilizes T-90 tanks (Though in many ways the T-90 is a derivative of the T-72). I think the current tank is fine. Maybe a T-80 tank would be a better choice to throw into the MEC arsenal (I believe the Russian Community Project has one or is working on one).DeltaFart wrote:I like it, different from the T72 that's commoner than a flies ona turd in the middle eastern style games. If this is supposed to be a group comparable to NATO it shouldn't have old technology, its got better than average rifles and jets, why not tanks too?

That outdated British tank would wipe the floor with most of what the Chinese currently use. The Chinese have very, very few fully modernised anything but are working on it.gclark03 wrote:Chinese armor fits them a lot better than outdated British armor, doesn't it?
Type 98 Main Battle Tank
Furthermore, with how secrative the Chinese Military is there is no way in hell they will sell their best gear to people they may need to fight with over oil or that might sell the information.
Lastly, it's not just Iran that uses this British tank. It's just an option to have more than just the one tank for the MEC as they would be using a mix of whatever they can get.

Agh, I have no idea about the arabs and persians now, I though persia for the most part was the whole of the middle east at one point untl alexander the great went by?
But hmmm, the current tank is a t90, it almost looked like a 72, though as seen from my latest mixup this wouldn't be a stretch to make a mistake with
Feel really fing stupid for that mistake, and Im being honest I never realized there was more to the division between the ME than being Shiite and Sunni, sorry guys if I sounded like an ***, I never knew about that. I figured it was just more like the tension between China and Russia with the different sects of communism.

well, if you're not happy with "outdated" british tanks, give them the challenger 2 (28 employed by Oman Source) or Challenger 1 (the Jordanian Army operates at least 288 of them Source)
And while we're at it we could give them Desert Warriors too! (254 operated by Kuwait Source)

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.
Many thanks to [R-DEV]Adriaan for the sig!

Give them a tank from the 60's and 70's as opposed to the T-90, which is apparently up there with the M1 Abrams?
Oh yes, sure, because they're from the middle east they have to be ignorant and use out dated stuff. Makes sense.

actualy , make sense (not the ignorant part), lot of nations have few modern tanks and tons of "outated tanks" , PLA by example, have around 100-200 ztz99s , and 400 ztz96s .Expendable Grunt wrote:Give them a tank from the 60's and 70's as opposed to the T-90, which is apparently up there with the M1 Abrams?

ahh dont worry about it it happens. most americans think iranians are arabs. blame it on our **** school systems. but i think you might be thinking of the Ottamon empire, which is what the middle east was known as until the 1920s.DeltaFart wrote:Agh, I have no idea about the arabs and persians now, I though persia for the most part was the whole of the middle east at one point untl alexander the great went by?

You could give the MEC french LeClerc MBT's too. According to wiki
United Arab Emirates have 388 + a few support variations.
(Leclerc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
And here's a list of tanks by country. Again wiki but hopefully it has some accuracy

Only to India (producing under license) and to Algeria (ordered from RF, but not all received).DeltaFart wrote:Has the RF exported T90s?
The upgrades available for the T-72 make them contenders even against the most recently developed MBTs, and upgraded T-72s (already in many ME inventories and sometimes produced under license) and T-80s have always made more sense to me for an ME force than export version T-90s. Even the Russian Army has about 20 times more T-72s than T-90s.
China is also upgrading their Type 69 (T-55) fleet and will probably offer the same mods for export.
Chieftan may have been suggested for ME a while back, but I can't recall, so the topic can stay open.
