i think the crashing now is actually pretty realistic. the only thing its missing is a bit more flames. I fully agree with the binocs.Fearosius wrote:1. When a AA missile hits your helicopter you usually go down in one shot, a few times I have survived but then drop to the ground at a very low speed and smash into pieces. Sometimes I even try to bail over before the helo touches the ground so I can survive and call for a evac.
What I find really unrealistic is how the helo crashes. I expect a litte turl (which I believe 0.5 got correct) around with smoke/flames coming from the engine, with the helo decending slowly, not this simple drop the floor like a rock. If you're an excellent transport helicopter pilot like me, you'll know what I'm talking about.
2. Have you ever noticed that with the USMC pilot (not sure about others) kit, you can see a binocular holder on his vest? Well, I believe the ALL pilots should receive a pair of binoculars in-case of an emergency.
Post your thoughts.

i have to concur with what Rhino said.
was on a Hamachi local server playing Bubba's training mod. Flew the Cobra, and got hit by something and man i started spinning like a Merrygoround. it was pretty crazy.
one thing i just thought about was mentioned by how the helo falls to the ground. What if, and this is a big if, you could slow the decent of the helo slow enough, that when it hit ground, it didnt blow up, but just became unusable (like a detracked tank, or knoccked out turret). This way the pilot has no use for the vehicle, but would simulate a helo getting shot down, and the crew surviving. Now you've got to actually use that red-smoke for more than covering your butt, and all your armed with is a pistol.

Not every chopper that goes down "spins in" and catches on fire for some random and unholy reason, as cool as it may be. On the same note, not every crash is survivable. Hell, even in a survivable crash it's quite likely you're not walking away from the damned thing.
For those of you that remember good 'ol Black Hawk Down, Durant's chopper went in nice and level AND the black hawks are specially designed to protect the pilot during a crash landing , but he still broke his femur and crushed a few vertebrae, he isn't walking anywhere. His co-pilot managed to extract himself from the cockpit but with his injuries, he wasn't going anywhere too quick either.
Current system, kthx.

well, I've never crashed in a heli, but in vietnam (real life) if the engine went ka-splat the twirling of the blades would provide enough lift for a rough landing, or spin out of control if just the main rotor or tail rotor went.
edit: well, it's pretty much true for all helis, but I just read about it in a vietnam book

Indeed, it's called auto-rotation: Autorotation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaOink-Blabber wrote:well, I've never crashed in a heli, but in vietnam (real life) if the engine went ka-splat the twirling of the blades would provide enough lift for a rough landing, or spin out of control if just the main rotor or tail rotor went.

If the tail rotor is taken out of action, the torque from the main engine will spin the body of the aircraft around (Which is what the tail rotor is there to prevent, or in the case of the Chinook and similar aircraft, a counter rotating second rotor, or on the Hokum a counter rotating rotor right under the other one. All the cool kids know that.) if the engines aren't taken offline in a hurry. However, not every chopper that goes down will randomly spin out of control and burst into flames just because it looks cool. Certain things have to happen.

I like the current crash sequence as is....but....
I would like to see fire effects on the ground around the crash similar to those of the current molotav cocktail effects.
IRL there would be fuel on the ground etc. and burning.

Shit doesn't catch on fire simply because you think it looks cool. Not everything that breaks or crashes instantly fucking explodes into a fireball.
Ever watch that episode of Family Guy where Meg races the Amish fellow and his horse and buggy goes sailing over the cliff? You know, where the horse is standing there and just fucking explodes for no good reason? Not PR material.
I could see it working if we could implement it if only certain conditions have been met, otherwise it's sitting right on the retarded line.

Why I think Pilots should get binocs and Maybe 2 extra field dressings.Fearosius wrote: 2. You are right and wrong. Depending on the forward momentum of the helicopter the loss of the tail rotor doesn't mean the the helicopter will spin out of control. If going fast enough the air passing along the tail fin will keep the helicopter from spinning. This is what the tail fin is for, not just a place to put the tail rotor.Kinote wrote: If the tail rotor is taken out of action, the torque from the main engine will spin the body of the aircraft around (Which is what the tail rotor is there to prevent, or in the case of the Chinook and similar aircraft, a counter rotating second rotor, or on the Hokum a counter rotating rotor right under the other one.
