Supressed Sniper Rifles
Let me begin by saying this is NOT a suggestion, it is a question.
In my time playing PR I have also grown more interested in the mechanics and operation of real life weapon's systems. Browsing around the Web and other sources I have gained knowledge here and there and a question has formed in my mind.
Modern military sniper rifles, up to and including those designed to use the 50 caliber round, almost always have the ability to be suppressed. In several Television documentaries I have seen footage both of American and Canadian sniper teams using various weapons and, with the exception of the M95 and M81 which are not primarily anti-personnel weapons, they always attach a suppression system to the gun.
This leads me to ask, for what reason are the Sniper rifles in PR left unsuppressed? Do these particular weapons not come with suppression systems? Was it a gameplay decision to keep Snipers from being overpowered? Or some other reason? Personally I am not going to be up in arms (no pun intended) if Snipers continue to operate at full volume, but just the same I think it would be perfectly fair to suppress any of those snipers which are capable of it. And note that by suppress I do not mean 'silence.' These are still huge guns we're talking about and they should go 'boom,' but that boom should be a little quieter and only heard from 200 or so meters away at maximum.
Final Note: I realise that 200 meters is probably a unrealistic even for a suppressed sniper, I simply chose that number out of concern for gameplay, which rarely sees snipers making shots past 400m. In real life these shots would be taking place past 1000m so it seems fair to make allowances for the difference between the scale of real life and PR shooting distances.

Actual ballistic or tactical reasons that a suppressor would or would not be used, you'd have to ask a real ballistician or sniper about.
As to why they are not in game, they really wouldn't make much of a difference in gameplay, and would pretty much be cosmetic. Suppressed high velocity rifles still make a good deal of noise (which we don't have authentic sounds for, either), and from my gaming experience, you already can't locate snipers and marksmen very well by sound except when you're almost on top of them. The sound of a suppressed rifle would then make it even more easy to confirm there is a sniper there.

and the chances of that happening are?agentscar wrote:Well if any covert ops. type of maps are ever added into PR,that'd be tight to have...But really the only suppressed sniper rifle I've ever seen is a Tactical M24 SWS...
i think zero, i would love for a DEV to prove me wrong.

PLEASE DO IT!!!
That way when I play on the US team I can act like Randy Shuqhart with the silenced M-14 as shown here: YouTube - Snipers from Black Hawk Down

I don't really like the whole silenced sniper deal. If anything, a nice noisy weapon will give you a motivation to stay out of your opponent's firing range or being anywhere close enough for them to come rape you in the face.
why aren't they still called silencers ? suppressor sounds like a short form of suppressed fart for me ...

Suppressor is also more accurate term, it suppresses the flash and sound from the weapon rather than making it silent entirely.
Also, in that clip Shugart's M-14 isn't silenced. Nub. =D Confusing a CAR-15 with an M-14 is fail on wheels.

Suppresing a bolt action rifle in PR serves the same purpose as shoving a frozen grapefruit up your butt to get a better MPG rating in your Hyundai.
even at about only 400 meters , the bullet should hit the target before they hear they shot. Yes, all bolt action rifles have the abillity to be suppressed, and an article in 2000 stated all M40A3's would be issued silenced, but of course they weren't. and I make shots that look like their past 500 meters, well, at least on the edge of visibility all the time. of course it's usually a second shot kill, or a third shot kill, or a tenth shot kill.

Sort of. There are two different parts that make up the noise of a gunshot. The supersonic crack and the expanding gasses made by burning powder. Virtually every bullet these days is supersonic (.45 ACP is one of the few notable exceptions), so even if you managed to eliminate all the sound made by expanding gasses (And suppressors don't even do that, that's why they arn't called silencers), the supersonic crack would still be audible. As for the main topic, the target is likely too far away to hear the shot of a sniper, and the bullet moves faster than the sound anyways. The point of a suppressor is to prevent them giving away their position to other enemies nearby.Oink-Blabber wrote:yep, it's the sonic boom that makes the noise, you either get subsonic bullets, or put a silencer on, so that it traps gas that makes the bullet go and slow it down. I think.

what are you talking about ?
obviously you dont know much about snipers... anyways
I should say this is a wonderfull Idea , Very great + If they add
Ghilie Suites it would be all realisitic as the sniper is all about
STEALTH.
Why not ?
