I have a HP. I ask about the system recovery because in the manual it says that i can do that from the start menu. And sure enough its there, ready and waiting to be clicked. It too tells me to back up my data and all that good stuff.
EDIT: I do not have anything worth backing up(unless there is something i dont know about). As i said in the other topic the only things worth saving to me is my games which are already on a CD(although my gf would have a hissy fit to see all her songs are gone and then she would give me a speech about how i take video games to seriously and i would proceed to slap her with a copy of BF2 repeatedly)

Now go on and back up your files into a external hard drive, DVD, or CD, but there is one thing I should point out before you do that; you mentioned earlier that you and your brother formatted your computer before because it had a virus. I suggest before you back anything up you also install a free antivirus software such as AVAST and do a quick scan of your files so you'll know what you are backing up is not infected to continue to wreck your life even after a fresh install.

I use Kaspersky 6/7 anti virus now and have been for quite some time. You know what they say...fool me once....you cant....you fool me once you cant fool me again.'[R-CON wrote:Cheeseman;644723']Great!

Its one kick@$$ product, didnt mean to hijack your thread.
Anyways best luck to you young buck, I do recommend getting a new videocard which will increase your gaming performance dramaticly. I think you said PCI-e so the cheeseman recommended ( i think it was cheeseman ) is really good and will definantly increase youre gaming experience as i mentioned.

iron... I am very similar to you in that i am not a computer wizard and used to rely on my older brother to do everything.
i reformatted my computer for the first time this fall and it was *very* easy. its harder IMO to reinstall all the right drivers to get your computer working again.
you will do fine.

If you have a recovery partition on your physical hardrive which is put there by the supplier (HP usuall do, as do packard Bell) then it will install windows, drivers and basic software and then you start installing software, uptodate DX9 Redist and remove old Nvidia/Ati drivers dependent on what card you have and then install latest ones off official website, then install your games and you are good to go.
Recovery partitions are great for n00bs as you simply boot your machine with no discs in, hit something like F8 or F9 (do them alternate and repeatedly to check which activates reinstallation) and then general knowledge takes you through the menus to get a cleaner install up and running.
If you don't have the recovery partition then things get more logical and lengthy.
Be aware that XP Pro can usually last 6 months before it starts to slow down if you are installing/removing software on a regular basis. Most gamers don't use style altering programs as they bog down installs, and they tend to reformat/reinstall a lot more frequently than normal users to squeeze every bit of power they can out of their installs, which of course equate into fps and smoother gaming.

What he's trying to say is that once he also relied on his brother to format his computer, because he didn't know too much about computers to do it himself. Until one day I'm guessing he decided to learn and take action by formatting. So he's encouraging you to be bold and not afraid to format the PC by yourself.ironcomatose wrote:What you talking 'bout willis?

I have XP Media Center edition, MrD.
Btw do i have to use the latest drivers for my graphics and sound card? I ask because with my sound card its so much easier just to use the default drivers because of all the problems the new drivers bring. With the graphics card its easier but i would like to leave it at its original because when its was at its original drivers that was was the simplest time of gaming for me, where everything just worked.
Anyhow i have enough information to go ahead with the formatting and i will, today when i get home from school.

Battlefield 2 Cleaner did the trick for me, now I clean the graphic cache each time the FPS starts hitting rock bottom. And I tried everything before that, including format C:, reinstalling BF2 etc, manually deleting the cache etc. I almost gave up getting consistent FPS until I tried bf2 cleaner, seems to be something strange going on randomly when shader optimization is running, because sometimes it appears a 2nd time without any settinges changed, and totally ruins my FPS.

Ok, ive completed my system recovery and am currently downloading the 1.41 patch after hours of installing hardware and software.
So far so good. Lets hope this works.

Open your computer case. Take out important parts and give them a good clean. I was wondering why fools road was going very slow, checked the temp of my graphics card. Was getting to 100º. Cleaned out dust etc... and now it maxes out at 70. Also lowered temps by about 10º for everything else. Maybe that will help...

Thanks for the advice though.
EDIT: Oh and first BF2 test was a success. I ran a nice game with 64 people very smoothly. Im now downloading the PR v0.75 files.
