Plane Range/Heights for Lock-On?

Post by Heskey »

Hey guys, can anyone please tell me what the height required for bombs, and the range required for missles is on laser guided targets please?

Testing with the A-10 on Kashan revealed you need to be 500m away for missles to lock, and over 500m altitude to get a GPS guided bomb lock on; firing from and beyond (but not below) both these heights and ranges resulted in a spot on BOOOOOOOOM!

Yet yesterday, I was flying the Eurofighter on Quinling, and I must have dropped at least 15 bombs from 1500, 1000, 900, 800, 700, 600, 500 and 300, and none of them hit. Rico claims they landed and hit the target but did not explode.

So what gives? And what're the ranges/heights for all planes?

the alti meter on the jet goes off the "sea level", which is the main water level in the map. So if your target is on a really high hill, say 100m above the water level then you are going to have to compensate for that.

its also a "arming timer" the bombs have so ehhh if your diving down the bomb will hit the ground faster etc meaning less time so that way you will need to drop it from a higher alitude.

also the bombs cant always lock on at some altitudes, cos of a vBF2 thing we cant get around thou if it hit the target then it was locked.

its around 500 to 600 you should be thou when dropping a bomb. might have been a server data error?

Thanks for the response Rhino, I'll give it a whirl next time I'm on - Provided awesomepliot793 doesn't C4 my plane ;)

If there is a laser target, I have no problem hitting the target on qinling. Make sure you come in towards the target (like, so it isn´t just behind a hill) about 700 alt and around 600m away release, you don´t actually have to be to acurate with the numbers, just over 500 each way.

But I imagine 'over 500 each way' doesn't mean over 1400+ height?

I find it hard to imagine there is a 'distance away from' for the bombs; don't you just release as soon as you hear "I've got lock on!" ?

a picture says more than a thousand words, so 25 pictures a second for 263 seconds must equal 6575000 words.

anyways, enjoy:

That is almost always too late.

Can it be changed then? :(

Cp2000 an excellent guide that I will try now.

The problem comes that unless the SOFLAMer is in your squad talking to you, most of the blue army will just SOFLAM SOFLAM SOFLAM without telling you WHERE are what - And with the voice not saying 'Locked On' until too late, it is impossible to bomb any targets made by anyone not in your squad.

You could have the marking squad talk to the commander, who talks to my squad leader, who then talks to me - But come on, when does that ever happen? When does a team ever have a Commander? Let alone one that knows how to do things.

Might be something to look into DEVs? An idea; perhaps lased targets can have their own marker automatically appear on the map to all air-bourne vehicles, so that planes (Who should be flying around with a transparent map up anyway?) will be able to see when targets become available, and can choose/line themselves up correctly.

---

SL's can make markers appear onto the map for the whole team, why not SOFLAM users for planes, or the whole team anyway, if specific vehicles are not possible? :)

not really afaik, we are going to look into it if we have time thou which i doubt we do tbh :p

but ye you must always drop it really well before he says that, you need to really drop it at 45degs from the target for the best hit, that means you really want to be the same distance away from the target horizontally as you do vertically, so 700m away and 700m high = 45 degs :D

Oooh, some very useful help going on in this thread.

Rhino; what say you to my idea of Laze making a marker on the map? I'm assuming it's not a lengthy thing to code, and would result in larger use-ability of bombers to the whole team due to the practical lack of communication? :)

Going on a local server now with doombringer0 and Dogpatch to get it right in various planes - If anyone else would like to help me practice at some point, send me a PM!

Also, height/speed indicators in different nation's plane, are they different, or are they all the same?

---

Well after much extensive testing on Kashan 64; I can reveal that the 'I've got lock on!' occured before being over-head of the target, and realising after hearing that resulted in a direct hit every time with GPS bombs.

Could this be another private-server feature that doesn't pass on to multiplayer? (Such as choppers spinning out of control)
