The insurgent maps arent the best starting point imo. tbh I never really play them. If you like playing as infantry, try some of the 16 player size maps. There tends to be a bit more action on those. Also always join a squad and if the squad leader isnt giving communicating, join another sq. Tell people youre new and most people will help you out.

I had a similar experience, yesterday I sent my laptop in for upgrades (which is what i was playing ArmA on) so i decided i'd check out all the PR action that i'd been missing out on while i was using my older computer. what really prompted me to DL the new PR was the huey, i love huey and the model looks great!.
so when i installed it i started out on battle for qinling(sp?) i got the hang of taxing which i liked, i also liked getting rid of the message spam, so i got on the runway and ended up taking off into the "off-limits" zone, wasn't that fun but my fault nonetheless.
I then started a local jabal to play around with the new hueys
.
I wasn't really a an of the ammo drop, i much prefered the "ammo from the vehicle method" my reasoning behind this was the fact that in PR you are very rarely stationary, therefore a mobile ammopoint would be alot useful than any crate o' ammo. I never liked the Blackhawk in PR, it's flightmodel was terrible and it accelerated FAR too fast, not to mention it would have a tendency to do barrel rolls without your permission. I figured the huey would have an awesome flightmodel, I was wrong, the huey still accelerated too fast and that was a bit of a disappointment.
Then I joined a Basrah server, I was happy to see someone was using the merlin for something other than scrap metal, though the rest of the team was fairly reluctant to utilize his assistance. I figured that this patch must have somehow improved the players attitudes, god seemed displeased at my pleasure and sent a god-forsaken eight year-old into my commander squad who begged and pleaded for a sniper kit.
I never got a chance to gun the scimtar but i did drive it, which was very nice, it was fast and had excellent handling over hills and good speed in the open. i did however get annoyed by the little map delay, i didn't really see it improving gameplay, it seemed more like an annoyance than a "realism feature". the minimap, a feature i wanted to remain in PR was removed in an appropriate manner, I didn't really have a problem with this.
after that round i switched to insurgent to quickly be disappointed by the jihad music =(. the IED and SKS were both very well done, I like the SKS alot more than the sagia (though i would like ot see it in another class).
I was also fairly dissapointed once again in the ammo department, not being able to use my truck as an RPG base made me alot less effective. it's good to see the VCP uncap, which did help the insurgent strategy.
sorry for the long post, just my first reaction to the new version.

Thats not really a featuer IIRC. When you press "M" for the map, you see the minimap getting bigger untill it covers your screen (happens really quickly). But since theres no minimap in PR, you dont see that, and theres your delayDarkTalon wrote:i did however get annoyed by the little map delay, i didn't really see it

Al Basra is the only smooth map on my pc.[R-PUB]MrD wrote:Al Basrah requires more power from your pc than the other maps in general. Settings you made for the Mod in general that were close to the lag point will not be good enough for Al Basrah and Quinling. If you know you are going to play either of those two then drop the settings a touch, play around till you get that best performance point again.
There is also two other factors with server lag. One is that the server needed resetting (they do occasionally, so check with other players on the server with a view to contacting admin under those circumstances) and the second is that Punkbuster from Evenbalance can be temperamental sometimes. Reinstalling comprehensively can make that go away
As to large maps and boring times, it could be merely the other side attacking at one point and not in several. Good spotting by your team of enemy movements and communicating this amongst all your team will help everyone to get in better places. The insurgent team is not as good on the combat side, with increased weapons deviation cones, but countered by the IED inventories and molotovs. Learn tactics with the basic kits to waylay enemies on likely avenues of approach they use and disable them. You can get a lot of fun out of waiting 10 minutes in one area with mines and IED's setup and then blowing the hell out of enemy passing.

But I love it anyway. Ghost Train and Fools Road seem to lag the most, those jungle ones in particular. I play on the Battlearena Server with 260 ping and it is better than in the Internode playing Fools Road.
Anyway I reckon that your poor experience would be hitting a round where everyone is tired cause its late at night and they've been playing for a bit (C'mon you all know you've done it) my advice would be to try and find another server and give it another shot. I know I did and it was a big help.

I got some more gameplay since this original posting.
The gameplay is slower then the hack n slash BF2 but alot less forgiving. I got picked off so many times and never saw where it came from.
It's awsome.
Where i am struggling the most nowadays is to be able to tell the diff between the armies. Since we dont have have name tags unless lined up in sights, do we have pics of the armies acessible? I know on some maps like deserts vs jungle, the gear will be different but i'd like to see if i can use some quick visual aids to pick them apart quickly.
I also died alot from hesitating before shooting for fear of TK
and i have TKed as well
Please forgive me if i shot one you already, use my noobness and not my dumbness as an excuse for now

Friendly fire happens. You'll get used to the new uniforms. If you are not sure, you can always open the map to see if there are blue dots in that direction.

Even then the new usmc and mec uniforms are still quite confusing, after seing totaly different uniforms for years in vanilla, at least that was my impression when the new uniforms appeared.

and what do i do when i spot someone at a distance, maps shows some folks there, could be them or not, no binocular, not all kits have them...
oh and no gun scope either.
I want to see visuals of the 2 armies on said maps, so i can see for myself and obtain visual markers/reference
Let me know if such a thing exists.
If it does not, let's hook up on some maps and do it, record it and youtube it

You could use PR singleplayer (minimod, newest version just released, you'll find it on the forums) for training too, just an idea.

Well, its pretty easy to tell the difference up close. You'll pick up on that pretty quick. The issue is at range a lot of the most telling details don't get drawn (like camo, helmets, etc)--which is a bf2 engine issue, not a mod "feature". I'd just advise you not to shoot in those situations. Check your map for friendlies, advise your squad, and move in until you get get some positive id.
If you are digging the mod overall you'll already know that shooting at everything that moves at all ranges isn't really the best strategy...as opposed to bf2/cod4 where it's the only strategy

yup, learning that hard way. that and shooting while prone. I cant count how many time i had the advantage on someone only to see them go prone and nail me
BOOM HEADSHOT to quote FPS Doug...
found some good infantry and squad training on youtube, great for basic learnings.
Oh dumb question, once you have spawned, i know you can request kits. Can you swap the kit you spawned with without dying, like from corpsman to Officer kit?

Yeah. The requested kit is now a pick-up kit you can exchange for your current one. It's like changing kits in vanilla, get the new one, drop the old one.kylerthegod wrote:Oh dumb question, once you have spawned, i know you can request kits. You can request the officer kit, but you cant change from officer to medic kit without dying. (Unless someone elce is a medic and dies, and you pic their kit up)

Why is that? I've seen officers pick up other kits, such as Heavy Anti-Tank, automatic rifleman and scoped rifleman, without dying.Waaah_Wah wrote:You can request the officer kit, but you can't change from officer to medic kit without dying. can't request medic kits
The main kits cannot be requested anymore. So if you chose to get a special kit once you spawned, you cant get your old one back (unless you pick it up again, but it disappears after some time). But you can of course request an officer kit and pick it up without dying, its just not possible with the main kits. (Dont ask me why, they should have made them requestable, even if its mainbase only)

An enemy medic, i hopeSabre_tooth_tigger wrote:Also you cant request a kit twice without dying, one of each type only each spawn
Also dont teamkill someone and take their requested kit, the game will kill you for your mercenary ethics.
I think you can take a normal kit without dying so you could undo the mistake with a medic you killed
