Re: [Quick Fix] Dust Effect landing Helis

Post by Alex6714 »

I have been playing around and I have made the effect more noticeable now. :)

I think it may be a bit too much, but I am uploading a video because I want opinions. I could tone it down a bit due to possible lag. I lag alot in smoke, and this brings my frames down but not too much, reducing the effect a little bit helps a lot.

Also, I have made it have a wider radius, maybe needs to be wider. Anyway, waiting for video now. Also, the LB doesn´t seem to use any effect for this?

So far I have only really tested in the BH and Huey. I guess I will try the others a bit later. :)

This is a nice idea, but unfortunately it falls down.
Smoke and similar effects put extra strain on your PC. The closer you are to the smoke, the greater the lag becomes. When you are within smoke, the lag is at its highest possible, dragging your frame-rate to the floor.
Pilots who know the frustration invloved in flying a full BH across the ocean, only to fall victim to a lag-spike lasting a second or more, only to find themsleves and the passangers to be sleeping with the fishes; will totally agree with me.
Its not going to work out well.
Everytime a pilot with a low-mid end PC comes into land/takeoff, they will find themselves praying to god/allah/buddah that things somehow work out.

Since when is Evenesence(sp?) "nu-metal"? :p

I do agree, but I am the first to lag massively in smoke (got help me if I am near a JDAM) and I am also a chopper whore. This does cause lag but not as much as I expected, but it can be reduced a bit if needed. Maybe I need to test it more.

Edit: Here, I think it is too much in the first video, maybe between that and the second video?

It depends on the type of desert I guess on whether it is realistic.

Sorry for the low quality, quickly made. :P

Example, each desert is different I guess.

Looks awesome man!!!

Great work! :D If this makes it's way into .8 that would just make my day.

1 question though, the first video, when you took off there was no dust effect? or am I just seeing that wrong?

Also,

I think video 1 was dead on :D

I like how you made it into a ring around the helo so the pilot can still see where he is landing (how it is in real life)

great work!

video 2 doesnt seem like theres enough, but still better than whats in game.

I think I may change the colour a bit and tone it down slightly. See what people say.

As for the take off, there was but not as much, becasue it is different terrain. Not as much dust on the road. :P

I didn´t really change that much. :) Just fiddled around, as Rhino said, trial and error. :)

the color could be changed a bit too as you said.

O.O I didn't really expect it to be a quick fix; i mostly said that to draw some attention. But wow! you really did this, quick!

:D kudos

New video uploading, I think it looks better now. :)

Need to see what you think, because the colour maybe a bit off, or not enough dust etc.?

Also added more mist to the water effect. In fact, most of them are changed except grass and leaf etc yet.

Aside from performance issues, that looks great! (video 1)

the colour will be quite dependent on the effect colour, light settings on the map, like qwai's ones are pretty fecked, why all the smoke nades etc are really purple :p

There you go. Better I think. Maybe needs testing on other maps.

needs some more delay to the sand flying up, and ehhh, you need to find a way to stop so much "dust" getting thrown up from concrete, maybe make a new effect for concrete etc?

Mmm, how would I go about doing that? I don´t think it needs too much of a delay tbh, but yes, a bit.

Edit: Alright, should be toned down quite a bit on concrete now.

As for delay, EmitDelay sounds like it. :) Just will test that.

Updated with a delay. Maybe hard to see with quality, but it trails a bit after the chopper. Also, the concrete effect is lessened as you can see. :)
