Helo Flight Modeling

Post by sawacs »

Simple Inquiry..

Flight models used to be great and flyable....

With the latest patch, they have become a "rat on acid"

What happened to the flight modeling with the helo's?

Do you have any plans on fixing them?

Btw, if you took inputs from a real helo pilot, he was providing bad information :)

Mmm, I can´t understand why PR choppers handle so differently than other mods in the tail rotor department.

There are many issues with the flight characteristics in helis. For one, you have to hover in order to gain altitude. IRL you can raise the nose up and it will do forward+up due to momentum and rotor spin, but if you do this in PR you go backward in sort of a stall

I remember desert combat(BF 1942 mod)having the best helo flight model I've ever encountered. Even with keyboard you could sort of feel the weight of the helo and with joystick it was just brilliant!

desert combat helo flying was pure fun, but also highly unrealistic, the helos acted as if they had no mass

I like the way the power works on the main rotor in this mod, although I need a lot more practice!

Without a helo control mock up on every players computer, and some serious time (like a year?) spent purely on coding the heli, I don't see a mod being able to get close to helicopter control. It's not all that simple at all!

Hell in some helicopters like the SeaKing, all they can see of the ground they're hovering over is out a small glass panel by their feet, and on coast gaurd /search and rescue sea kings they rely on the winch man to give them direction and amount of movement required, we're never going to get this in depth in a mod! Esecpailly on mods where any smacktard can fly a heli without having to pass some sort of helicopter training (like Americas Army style).

Why not put the Helo flight modeling back like it was originally?

Just an idea....

BTW, the original modeling of the helos in the first release of PR was outstanding. I cannot figure out what happened between now and then. The only thought that comes to mind is PR wanted to make them so difficult, that most folks would not want to fly them.

As I have said the Mod does not take into account of pilot training. Pilots can fly smooth, and take the machines near there limits safely, they don’t have to fight it all the way.

Yes it separates players with more flying time and skill in game with it being so difficult. But is it enjoyable? If I wanted a to fly realistically I’d put on MS FS.

I just wish I could fly like in FS, in that I can do the things I want and fly smooth.

Been playing AIX just for the flying for the past week or so. I just love the fact you can do impressive things like fly low and fast and for some reason that Mod looks more fantastic and runs better but its cartoony when it comes to kills.

Simple fact the Helo’s are in my view nothing close to realistic, jittery under powered, awkward to fly.

What I have taken from your statment is realistic flight modeling doesn't matter to you. If it did, you would revert to MSFS...

You are also saying that by creating an unrealistic flight model, folks that are willing to take the time to learn how to fly an "abortion" will prevail? This is not the point of "reality".

The mod never took into account pilot training and never should. A specific variant of helo will fly its on certain way regardless of pilot training. PR should never make flight modeling dependant on rank. If I read you correctly, you imply that the helo modeling should fly somewhat sloppy and unlrealistic based on a persons flying skill? A specific helo will fly the way it is designed to fly regardless of whom is at the controls.

The PR Team has come up with an outstanding simulation of the battlefield and I respect them for that. I am simply highlighting and issue with the flight modeling that needs to be addressed IMHO.

No offense intended..

And what's up with the helo's in ARM:A. You go to use the tail rotor in a hover and you start to flip?
But yeah I have to say the flight coding in PR is odd but I can't say I'm against it or should I say a serious issue.

To me it seems to have changed for the most recent variation... but maybe I'm just broadening my exposure. I'm actually quite impressed with their handling. It's not how I'd like it ideally, but as mentioned, that would be like the old Desert Combat way. At least with them the way they are, the attack helo's can provide a stable platform for the gunner. That's almost all I'm interested in now. Sure they should be able to climb, but again, I feel this is an evolution of adjustment. It'll be slightly different in the next release, and some will like it, some wont... but it'll be a positive adjustment I'm sure.

That right! Me and my m8´s spent so much time on this game. It was really fun to fly the choppers there.

But i think it hasn´t anything to fo with the PR Mod. You right it was great fun, but it was a so unrealistic way to play(and fly). Think no one want this in a mod called Project Reality ;-)
