I don't know if this is possible, but it probably is. My suggestion is to make all the vehicles slower on non-road surfaces to encourage the use of supply lines. This wouldn't affect tracked vehicles as much, but those with wheels would take a larger speed reduction hit. This encourages the use of roads and makes ambushes a reality.

And yes, I did get this idea after playing ArmA

personally i dont like this idea. It would mean that flanking with vehicles would be impeded and right now flanking is the best tactic to use.

This will no doubt lead to camping roads. Now if there were multiple roads spread out from each other, it'd be harder to guard each one. If this were to be added, maybe make it so vehicles with wheels can still manage on bumpy roads. All-wheel drive, I imagine, is implemented on vehicles.

This is a very important suggestion - the fact that roads are merely suggestions rather than the main way to travel annoys me. Unless there are tracks on your vehicle, there should be few reasons to ever leave the road, even if your vehicle is 'off road' capable. It means that travelling in convoy and securing supply routes is a game feature, not a waste of time.

Myself and some I play with thought roads already made you go faster, but it means the risk of mines! I guess they're smoother which in BF2 can mean faster more fluid movement!

I'm not sure if its possible. I remember a discusion on another mod's forum, about why they gave their tanks speed XYZ instead of speed ABC.

The answer was that they had to chose something between the on-road and off-road speed.

So it might be... hardcoded.

I don't mean that offroad should be impossible, just reasonably impeded.

Don't touch my offroading command truck! There are maps like Kashan and Basrah where taking a road is a Bad Idea. If you go off road, you have to be more careful to prevent flipping over. I do not like this idea.

I prefer the operation archer method, REALLY rough terrain so vehicles have to stick to the roads.

A reasonable speed increase on roads, or decrease on rough terrian would be good however.

Not to mention this would also encourage the use of convoys as opposed to a random blob of vehicles.

In a sense, they do go slower.

The roads are mostly flat in the game, but the offroad isnt. And thus, climbing over little hills=slower then going straight at it.

Tanks go accross flat desert IRL with no speed difference (or very little, as far as I know)

If anything, Jets need to go slower (And lift slower) as they get higher... Less air to get lift and thrust out of =D

Suggested before. Roads are just a decal, and have no effect on the vehicles' speed. What it does, though, is give you a smooth path to travel on. Those civi cars will blow up on the first bump sometimes.

I agree that the current idea of the off road is bumpy and you run the risk of damaging your vehicle or getting it stuck give roads there benefit to being used. I've set up road blocks out of cars on Archer and stopped entire convoys with a few RPGs which is fun it just requires patience and knowing were to hide.
Also if you tired to get people to have to secure supply lines I doubt it would ever happen. In the real world that entails lots of sitting and waiting for most of the time nothing to happen. Since its been my experience that few people will actually sit for long periods of time have supply lines that would have to be constantly defended due to that being the only logical way to get supplies wouldn't work.

I can drive perfectly with all vehicles.... have rolled a couple of command trucks though :grin:

Anyone here who has been driving for a few years (like myself) knows that because a dirt road has been refined into a hard easy-to-grip surface, the wheels wont spin out and unless it has been raining and its slushy, you wont lock up. On streets, the grip should be okay, but in hot climates where tarmac melts, you have less grip.

But on grass and especially banks of grass and uphill slopes, its EXTREMELY difficult for ANY vehicle to climb. Climbing a grassy slope in anything bigger than a scrambler MXBike or quad, is like trying to climb a silken bedsheet drapped accross a washing line :D

I see guys in PR taking advantage of the ability to climb steep slopes in tanks (like on quinlingling :P ) and i dont think its realistic. I rekon roads in PR should have the fastest surface speed.

Oh heres a question, isnt it easier for infantry to walk on grass than it is for them on roads?

and how many offroading supply trucks (or any vehicle for that matter) do you see in Iraq today?

roads exist for a reason and thats because vehicles handle pretty badly when there isnt one, it has always irked me how a hummer can easily drive at full speed through a bog in zatar wetlands.

besides, roads have always been a key strategic asset throughout the history of warfare and entire wars have been won or lost due to them, just look at Operation Barbarossa for example where Hitler's panzers were stopped dead in their tracks when russian dirt roads turned into waist deep sludge during spring.

The truth! Please add this, it would make ambushes and especially IEDS much more effective and thus people will start using them more. It will promote teamwork a lot i think. :-)

There is also less resistance when your at high altitudes. And AFAIK jets DO go faster at higher altitudes.
