Breaking the FPS record

Post by Outlawz7 »

So here I was wondering about the other day - what is the highest FPS I could get?
Settings all on Low/Off, smallest resolution as possible (800x600x60Hz), view distance at 50%, Hills of Hamgyong and starring at the sky :p

FPS of 361.6 :o

Image

I tried this on Qinling and Karkand, Karkand coming second with 340 and Qinling 184, same settings.

So now I'm wondering how higher can anyone else come to with their uber-rigs?

Use the game.lockfps ### in the console when in-game to allow your FPS to go higher than 100 btw.

Ha well I'm pretty sure my comp would never get that high.

Do you get a lot of horizontal tearing? when the FPS goes that high?

Strictly speaking isn't your FPS only 60 frames per second since your LCD monitor (making a big assumption here :-D ) is restricted to 60 Hz (60 cycles per second)?

Only if the game is running VSYNC, if not, then it can go as high as your computer can run it.

BTW: I beat your record :P

490.

uhm yes, most monitors are either 60 or 70 hertz (frames per second) but there are those that can go up to 90.

as an comparison; the average TV broadcast is 25 frames per second, unless you live in the US and A, where you get 23.7 frames per second.

then you have the human eye + optical nerve + brain which generally have a response time of 30ms, which techincally makes everything above 33 frames per second overkill.

Unless you have trained to lower your reaction time and worked on eye-hand coordination, like me, for years.

And I have proof.

Ok somebody in this topic mentioned horizontal tearing, I'm not sure if this is the same thing but
When I walk up to a coragated fence with a pattern of vertical lines all the way along the fence, like this:

||||||||||||||||||

when I'm standing like 5m or closer and move left to right, there is what seams to be (I don't know how to describe this or what it's called but I'll give it a shot) tearing? like the image is uhm... Lets just say I see lines running from left to right of my screen (not of any particular colour)

What is this phenomenon? if I can call it that..

But TV uses motion blur, which is why 23 frames per second suffices.

So how long would suppression last with those settings? 0.1 secs?

Ok, I will bite. Just cause I have nothing better to do at the moment.

HOW does one go about "training to lower their reaction time, and hand-eye coordination" for a shooter like PR???

:)

it doesnt work that way. The human brain that is. You can better it to a certain level (this level is very personal) and even then its only by half a millisecond if you're lucky. Some ppl just have these skills naturally no one knows why. The rest of us just have to live with what we have.

dont think wat u have is horizontal tearing. horizontal tearing is pretty obvious and i dont think many people get it. its more like half ur screen isnt aligned to the other half. i am guessing waht u r experiencing is just badtexture filtering. wat settings do u play at?

He bit, I get to brag :D yay.

But yeah, it took me a few YEARS to get this good. And yes, it does indeed help in PR.

I'm gunna be picky but that's not actually the links between your optic nerve, brain and your fingers improving ;) The actual speed that your brain can perceive the difference images being sent by the eye is more or less limited to around 30 FPS... what's improving with practice there is your reaction time; the speed at which the muscles in your hand are flexing the tendons that control your fingers. You are blindingly quick, yes. You will be a ton better, physiologically, at that than somebody who's only played for a matter of weeks or months, yes - but it's only your reaction time changing - and that is throttled by the fact your brain can't perceive differences in images closer than around 25-30 miliseconds apart.

It just can't; the body's nervous system is like a computer, it operates on electrical impulses. There's a limit to the speed at which the body can charge and discharge the cells in nerve tissue. To us it's virtually instantanious in most circumstances, but it can't be improved beyond normal functioning even with practice.

It's like copper wires being able to handle so much bandwidth - the only way to increase bandwidth, ultimately, comes from upgrading the network from copper to optical cable.

I thought it was all down to age, if your over 25 then you get slower

It doesnt matter much in pr anymore since deviation came in

is there a competion for the lowest? i got 6 the other day on qwai  i use fraps BTW thats why i can see FPS below 15, if i lower my screen resoloton from 1280x1024 to 1024x768 will i get a much better FPS or will it be marginal? i need a way to make my suppwression affect last less time, usually when i get it i go rgith down to 15-16 FPs causing it to last for up to 10seconds sometimes.

1280 X 1024 is a 5:4 ratio which does take a lot more processing than 1024 X 768 which is a 3:4 ratio, so, if your system is struggling to perform at 5:4, then use 4:3 instead you should definitely see improved performance in FPS
