Disclaimer: I'm not saying the game sucks, I'm saying I suck, and there's some aspects of the game that need to be looked at to prevent newbie hatred.

Ah yes, virgin players, gotta love them. Played on a few servers, with various squads.. Don't have a mic hooked up, maybe that's the part of the experience I'm missing. The game sucks if you don't have a good squad, spent the better part of an hour respawning after getting shot by invisible enemies.

I figured this mod would be cake after I had played Red Orchestra for so long (Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45), but there are enough key differences to make me suck at it.

And the game has a way of punishing new players, especially mic-less ones like myself. If you're not talking on VoIP then you're kicked from every squad until you end up solo'ing or in the **** squad where everyone sucks, your leader has no clue what a rally point is, and we all run around like dumbasses until we die.

And the handy way the game kills you (!!!!!!) when you get in the wrong vehicle position. Seriously, what the hell. Boot me out of the vehicle, kick me in the nuts, do SOMETHING, as long as it DOESN'T involve me dying for sitting in the wrong position for too long. And I understand that you're supposed to be punished for dying, but the fact that I spent 60 seconds waiting to respawn just because I sat in the wrong fucking chair is ridiculous.

And the fact that if you try to spawn at one of the rally points not in your squad (which I did numerous times because I was kicked from a squad for being mic-less), you get teleported magically back to the base, in which case (at least some of the time) you spawn 20 feet above a wooden ramp and get injured when you land. I wish I could remember the name of this map, it was one where the British are fighting rebels, but to whoever designed it: shame on you.

I guess I should have read more before trying to play, but I'm a hands on learner, which is why I rarely read manuals, they usually just end up confusing me. Maybe I'm a dumbass, who knows. I guess this game will have to be an exception.


Anyway, I'm going to find a mic, I know I have one around here somewhere *rummages*... and give the game a second chance tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have better luck.

It's no problem - when I started playing over 1 year ago, I was a lot worse. I remember one game when I pestered my squad about whether my SLAMs would kill a tank, and ended up getting squad-kicked.

If you decide not to read the manual, you'll eventually pick up the nuances of the mod (as I did). In hindsight, however, I wish I had read the manual earlier on to save myself the embarrassment of learning on the spot and making so many stupid mistakes out there on the Internet battlefield.

That said, read everything you can find about PR, then practice to no end. Get a mic, join a squad as a grunt (learn how to play medic as well), and your skill will only grow until you become comfortable. Whether you last long enough to become comfortable or even a highly skilled player (I wouldn't even call myself a skilled player yet, even after a year) is based solely on your interest in the mod and your perseverance in learning the basics.

Anyway, we're glad to have you as a member of the community - by joining the forum, you made the best decision a new player can make, second only to reading the manual cover to cover. :wink:

My first experiance was one of base rapage, or rather, the victim of such. I spent my first map dieing, respawning, dieing, respawning, I think I killed two guys the whole match, and didn't use a mic. My second match, I miced up, and played Basrah Insurgency mode, and never looked back. Is the game punishing to newbies, hell yes. I still get irritated some times and am still learning things about the game even though I read the manual ect.ect.ect. If you stick with it and get a mic, the game will reward you with unparalleled teamwork, a sense of espirit de corps and one kick *** time.

To address some of the points you've made in my limited understanding:

1. Death in Vehicles - Since you can't use it, all you're doing is taking up a seat that someone who can use the vehicle needs. I don't believe it's possible to "boot" you out of the seat, so it does the only thing the engine can, it kills you to prevent you from hogging an asset you can't use, and assets in this mod take forever to respawn, so you occupying one is a bad thing.

2. Squads - Being Miced up is very important, if you're not miced up, information flow is slow and in a game where one stray bullet can put you out of commission, the faster and more complete, the better. While I haven't run into a situation where most squad's kick you, understand they are doing it for the sake of the squad, not because they have a problem with you.

3. Rally points are the mods answer to the Squad Leader Spawn, and you can't spawn on Squad Leader if you're not in that squad in Vanilla can you? I haven't run into the issue of falling from a high height, but then again, I haven't gotten through every map, I tend to stick to my favorites, but just remember your squad's number and you'll do fine.

If tomorrow you still don't have fun, remember, PR is not for everyone, it's frustrating and annoying early on and even once your comfortable with the game you can find yourself cursing at your monitor and swearing bloody vengence on the devs every so often, reading the manual is very important because of several very complex systems in place, but I promise you that if you find even a little bit of fun in the game, if you work to learn the system, you'll never want to play vanilla again.

Really, Read The Field Manual.
Lots of people have worked very hard to make it a quick and easy guide to PR.
It truly is a learning cliff, not a curve but if you think of it more as an RTS game that you get to play from the FPS perspective you will adapt much quicker.

I suck.
I have an old computer and I'm not sober most times I play and I can do well.

Why ?

I'm sneaky.

Also I know the maps well, but you can learn them quickly if you are familiar with terrain and the concept of flanking.

Move slow and make sure your volume is on high, regardless of the sound quality selected.

Think, listen, look ...............then move.

Buy a mic or stop playing.........................or type @ 120wpm or better.

There are lots of vets that will guide you along but they can't type for shiite so you have to have a mic.

If you want to play for a quick 20-30min game, play the Basrah map, anything else and you need 2 hours plus because the game requires patience.

But patience is a double-edged sword because you may run into that true sniper, the person who will wait 20 min for the perfect shot, and lucky you, first time noob comes diddy-bopping along and bang......800m headshot.

Welcome to PR, a complex mod with an original approach, realism. PR isn't like most games, it has a rather deep learning curve. The manual is a must read and it's newbie-friendly. The new players don't get as shafted before like in .6. I remember joining a squad with no mic hooked up, a poor comp that could hardly run it, and the only thing I had was the manual I read while installing the mod.

Now, the community's gone friendlier. Or maybe I've made a small name for myself. Either way, if you continue to play, you'll find yourself good at a special task. Be it medic, squad leader, armour, or good follower, people will come to know you for your abilities. Even without a working VoIP setup, regulars can count on me to follow the order.

Stick around, it's worth it. The PR tips you see when the map loads up are good refreshers of your memory, and may tell ya something you don't know. And if your mic works, I think you'll be golden. :)

Thanks for the advice guys. A quick readthrough of the manual told me everything I wanted to know :-\ Don't I feel dumb.


Anyway. Can't wait to get ahold of some of those jets. It's probably the only thing I'm qualified to use in this game, considering I'm an aviation major :-\ Should be fun.

if we could do any other method than killing ppl for getting in vehicles they cant use, like force them outside we would. the problem is the BF2 engine is very limited in things we can do like that, the only thing we can do is stop the player from driving the vehicle, send him warning messages and then kill him after so much time if he still dont get out to allow other players to get into the vehicle who can use it.

We understand the game is very hard for new players, why we have put up loads of guides, manuals etc to explain to new players how the game works.

So ye, you need to really just learn alot about all the changes, then you will get how it works ;)

About the dying in the driver's seat (which happened to me too): neither the ingame message or manuals state that you will die when remaining in the wrong position. Perhaps that could be more clear in at least the manual.

It says that you need a crewman/pilot kit in the manual and when you get inside the wrong seat, so why did you still stay in there if it said that you had the wrong kit? All you are doing is holding the position for someone with the right kit.

Except for "READ THE MANUAL" this is probably the best tip you can give to a newbie. Don't run out in the open without knowing whats on the other side/who is watching the open terrain.

Welcome to the forums Staerke!

I think you have the right attitude and if you stick with it youll probably start to enjoy the mod alot more!

Make sure to join a server with a good reputation (try out Tcombat.com, TexasTeamplayers, Tactics&Teamwork, 10th Mountains or Tacticalgamer.com to start). The quality of players makes a HUGE difference in gameplay for PR, so this is an important part of having a good experience in PR. If you can get into a good squad this will help you alot and you can learn alot this way.

Like others have said, weve tried to make the game as new player friendly as possible but there is limits to the things we can do in the BF2 engine. The PR dev team is commited to continuously adding innovative gameplay features into each new build. We want to keep the gameplay evolving with each new release so you'll always be learning :)

I don't know where to start. except, read the manuel. Its long, but you need the info.

heres a couple of tips:
Dont run, dont yell down the mike, use the environment, notice how stuff dissappears in the background, be covert, be silent, read the forums daily, join a clan, have lots of coffee at the ready, dont swear, use military terminology, make sure everything you say is clear and consise, do not break server rules, observe, observe, and observe, and never ever jump in a jet without practising on a training mod,solo a tank,or gunship on a populated server.

EDIT:I dont remember spawning mid-air on mestia, could it be a client side issue?
Heres a link to where you can download the training mod. its the big maps with all guns and vehicles and some targets littering the landscape, very good for honing personal skills.

There are also more servers out there who is serious but these are the ones that can deliver good PR gameplay. ( just my own experience)

Atleast if you join a squad with a SL with .:iGi:. tag you can be 90% sure if you say you are new and all that they can show you alittle around. Problibly with other guys to but thoose guys is the once I know is friendly and can help a newbie except isooth he is a n00b.

And also with the jets take your time and look at these tuts made by rhino ;)

Download the training mod (search for it on this forum) or load up a local server and test out the jets, ESPECIALLY landing them, before you can even think about getting in one of those :)

Stick with it, get a mic ASAP and try learn as much as possible, in a few weeks your wonder how you ever played anything else :D

First ever time i played PR i didn't know what the hell, i was doing!, but i got the hang of it in the end, requesting kits etc...basically you need crewman kit to operate apcs/tanks etc and pilot kit to pilot helis and planes...etc etc..

Hey, it doesn't matter how poor the quality of players are when you are using voip and having a laugh. A brilliant game without voip still isn't satisfying.

We at iGi like good players. We like them to think fast, communicate fast and move/respond fast. We don't care too much about terminology, rigid squad structure, etc. Be there when told a few minutes before by movement order or voip that something is going to happen and everythings fine. Avoid shooting at anything at moves, therefore bringing fire down on the rest of your squad/team, then we're happy. Innovative gameplay is fine by us!

The gaming at PR is all about the voip, then it scales down a list of regular stuff that doesn't need mentioning (assumed knowledge stuff)
