Same here really, I usually come in low and fast, then flare and land usually still moving a bit forwards. Basically like a plane I guess.

yeah low and fast is the best way to fly around, but on certain maps it's usefull to do a high altitude insertion. If your flying the little bird theres actually no use for the flares cause all the missiles will hit you anyway.

an interesting technique in 0.5 Basra is to move at landing speed and skim the roof tops. that way they dont know where or when you will land and waste there time trying to get a lock on between buildings instead of getting to a more open area.

Really, hot LZs are a death trap. Speaking from the point of view of a .50 cal gunner on Kashan 16 numerous times, the maneuver where the pilot comes down low at a high velocity and then pulls up into the ground gives me more than enough time in between the chopper's deceleration, landing, and reacceleration to put the needed rounds into its hide. On wide, open maps, distance and natural cover are much better defenses than fancy maneuvers.

Of course, coming in high, slowing down then going down vertically is going to make you even more of a target. If you make a low fast run and notice a .50 you can always try to break away.

The point of doing a landing from high altitude is not to drop the troops in a hot LZ. but to do it without getting noticed.

if once you've landed, and you seem lke you're gonna tip over. don't even try to use your mouse to stabalize the chopper hold down S, and that usually does the trick.
