Have I been told correctly?

Post by Hetzer »

I've just noticed, and been informed it's so, that the grass you think you're hidden in is actually invisible to anyone looking at you if they're more than 50m or so away. Is this correct? It would certainly explain how I've been targetted when I thought I was completely hidden. I assumed people were using wall-hacks!

If so, it's a game-stopper for me. Might as well be playing on a billiard table, and can see no point in having the grass at all. It obscures my vision, but not the person's who's looking at me?

after a certain distance some grass doesn't draw is correct.. and has always been thus in gaming.. I remember the first time I discovered this in a game called joint ops I was so pissed, but that's just the way it is with DX9 games im afraid

If what you say is right, you make a good point about you not being able to see them. But i dont know alot about this matter, maybe they could fix the problem by making one biiiiig grass instead of lots of small once, so it wont be such a lag on the PC...

Anyone getting me?

undergrowth / grass only draws upto a average of around 80m depending on the map, so if a player 80m away has a clear view of where you would be sitting with nothing blocking his way, say 150m away, when your hiding in grass he will just see you on open ground yes. Its a common problem we cant do much about, how ever we have made "overgrowth fields" and other things, like the fields on Al Basrah which you can hide in as they will draw upto the map's view distance. How ever we can not use these on every map.

Isnt this just something that is common in any games even now. Looked at far cry a maginifcent game for its year and even if its hided better with alot of overgrowth you can still see that the grass dosent draw over a certain distance.

I found this sentence quite funny and since this is a war game forum I will put it here. No offense to the french just a good laugh.

I've just been testing it with my brother and it slowly 'grows down' into the ground as you move back.

On the desert maps it's not really an issue, but I prefer the jungle maps, and for sniping it's a major issue for me. The number of times I've used a keyhole in the grass, thinking I was hidden, then going "WTF?!" when I've been fired at.

Oh well, it's an engine limitation and not much can be done about it other than some places where you chaps have been able to use alternative grass/undergrowth. Unfortunately there's no way to tell one type from the other, until somebody shoots you through it.

The jungle terrain is really superlative, and sneaking around in it, getting a good position, has been incredibly good fun. But now I'm aware I'm not as hidden as I thought I was it's all gone a bit pete tong. I spend a good amount of time and patience, and too often I've been hit when I should have been invisible and thinking people were using those tired old hacks. Bummer. No doubt I've also been seeing targets that I shouldn't have been seeing.

You chaps have done a fantastic job with the tools available, but the caveat is "tools avaialable". Flakey cover and hit-point based vehicles that do not have accurate armour and penetration models = a lot of frustration and removal of skillful tactics. Add the considerable flakiness of the game itself, re CTD and also killing my internet connection periodically, I guess I've hit the wall pretty quickly. It's a shame, because the mod looks and plays fantastically well otherwise.

Overgrowth renders at far greater distences, if you're in a built up jungle with trees and the like, you're still hidden.

You never noticed that YOU could see THEM? :P

But yeah, I heard this while playing BF2 and I was sooo disappointed.
Its a shame, but I can agree with how now, it only blocks you and not them.... Its nice at close range though, and some maps have it drawing further.

Welcome to online gaming ;) To date there is NO game that draws grass at any distance (besides the old delta force games)

But yea our new grass fields draw at distance, but they have to be on perfectly flat terrain, and they have some other quirks, but at least they draw at distance

I use (used) the grass on the tops of hills etc probably 80% of the time. Seriously, I've lost count of how many times I drew fire, even before firing myself, and was non-plussed by it. Call me thick, eh? :D

There are games that have solved it, by using solid bitmaps that become opaque when you're right up to them, allowing a shooter to remain hidden while being able to see through to shoot. WWII-Online uses them everywhere...low FPS hit and work very well.

Maybe another solution would be to make a player become invisible when prone in grass to anyone further away than the grass' 80m draw-distance? Would that be doable with the BF2 engine?

Well, here's the problem with that: hide back in the bushes, prone (of course), and try to see through/past all that grass in front of you. It ain't happening, is it. You have to come somewhat out of the trees and bushes and reasonably close to the edge of the grass so you can see a keyhole. Or poke your head out of it.

As it stands ( :D ) the grass is a double liability...it doesn't hide you, but it obscures your LoS when prone. That simply can't be right in a realism game like PR, considering how much of it is about on the battlefield. If it can't be fixed I'd suggest completely removing it and putting small bushes under the trees around the edges of woods, and maybe scatter small groups of them around in open spaces. If the grass' cosmetic value is great (and I'd suggest it is) make it short enough that it doesn't obstruct LoS while prone.

Think about it...anywhere there's grass you basically cannot go prone. You see nothing but are seen by anyone further away than 80m.

Unfortunately it's impossible to change without everyone lagging the hell out of his PC. :(

Hetzer its been looked into allot here and its been tried. You just joined so I would look around first before making any suggestions. Personally I have no problems sniping. But I'm also not "hiding" on top of hills.

Find The Sniper :

[HINT: Hes not on the ridge line]

We cant really change the game mechanics so in turn you have to change the way you snipe. Step 1 : dont "hide" on top of hill to snipe. Use the objects around you and behind you. The biggest way sniper get caught is creating a silhouette, which being on top of a mountain will do.

Whos got the bag of locks around here?

*Sigh*

Right now my mouse is freezing on the "Select Spawn" screen soon as I join a server. Tried re-booting (usually clears a problem with BF) but no joy. Another hurdle to add to my sniper's lot. :D

Wrong forum : PR Help and Hardware Issues - Project Reality Forums

Pr is a big game, maybe try to be a simple boot before you go off being a sniper. Most maps are going to limit the amount of snipers anyways.

Setting my controls back to default fixed it.

I play a bit of everything until I find what I'm best at. Each game has it's own quirks. If I can't get a sniper I go marksman or auto-rifleman. Failing all three I go grunt.
