Those effects actually do happen, with the exception of tail rotor failure, on dedicated servers.

o.0 me and my pilot shot down enemy heli and we went to ram the pilot floating dowm on parachute and we blow up when we hit the guy instead of him being bug juice on windshield

LOl ive had that happen to me on Op archer(the crash landing bit). We were in a huey and the pilot got sniped out and we were just yanking and banking towards the ground. It all has to do with the skids. Helicopter skids in PR can endure falls from ridiculous heights, but once you hit the ground unevenly (like most bad landings or crash landings), the chopper explodes instantly.
I've taken advantage of this on Basrah, when I once crash-landed at high speed in the Merlin by using the skids to absorb the shock.

That's a pretty cheap shot at Mobius' argument - his point is that a crash still screws with the control surfaces of the vehicle, whether it explodes in a holocaust of fire and metal or not.

I mean more in relation to the wheels buckling, but since these effect are based on an overall health level rather then impact area, it wouldn't be fair for people who get sprayed with an MG to loose the capability to land properly. So it was a pretty naff idea. Never seen an engine cut out though, bet that gets interesting.
What happened to that effect that threw helis off course when their rudders got hit by the way? did that have to be removed cos of lag?

There's not much point in slating it, alot of the stuff PR devs wanna do is due to the licensing not the engine. Also there aren't many engines that support the jet/tank/heli etc combat with so many players so smoothly. Plus it's getting old, so to be honest it's not too bad if you ask me.

I think it's hilarious how vehicles and aircraft behave on this engine. I always lol when I witness it. I like how say a helo will either #1 instantly transform into a wreak when destroyed (no intermediate damage) or #2 explode into a fine mist with nothing left except 4 little pieces of shrapnel. I have a hilarious vid of some loaded merlin landing a wee bit too hard and detonating into a fine mist. lol But yeah, increase the speed at which a chopper can hit the ground without exploding. Make it suffer some damage maybe if it hits pretty hard.

I suspect all damage is treated as the same. This would match with tanks blowing up after going over bumpy ground, EA did change this in a patch but I doubt they actually implemented a proper damage system. They probably just upped the health of tanks & the damage rpg did
The engine cut out or tail rotor damage is purely random afaik. When you reach 20% or 10% health then you get a random chance of this. I would love if when the engine cuts out, you glide for a bit and have a slight chance of a bad landing that doesnt destroy the vehicle. Disabled, hurt and lost in a field somewhere but not instantly dead like happens now.
I think its hardcoded basically. It might help if the pilot switches out of the cockpit, Ive seen helis drop 50 feet and land ok with no pilot. Also if you bail out 20 feet off the ground you might live
Is it possible to have more then 2 types of special damage effect. On tanks, you have turret disabled and tracks disabled.
Maybe there could also be a chance of masses of fuel leaking into the exhaust and creating tons of smoke (all 3 crewman lose vision). Or the top speed is limited to 1mph (simulating fuel loss?) Or the tank makes a really high/low (distinctive) pitched noise or the turret works but the shell loader breaks and you only have coaxial left.

shame we can't implement a helo crashing by disabling the engine and damaging/killing some of the men inside upon hitting the ground but not destroying the helo untill a few seconds have passed. allowing people to survive a heli crash - thus requiring rescue missions etc

lol, my first post is me jumping into a debate, but regardless.
When I first heard of PR, one of my fantasies concerning the game was being a blackhawk pilot and transporting my squad, and as I flew in to extract them an rpg hit my rear rotor blade and I started to spin out, I managed to crash land behind a hill but instead of my heli exploding, it was simply disabled so it couldn't fly and I was injured. So I jumped out and ran away and the heli automaticly exploded about 10 seconds later (So it could respawn) and the wreck was left for a long, long time. And so I was taking cover behind the wreck of my heli, shooting down the insurgents who came near, all blackhawk down style.
As you can imagine, I was sorely dissapointed when I found out you magicly exploded because you hit the ground at 200 speed.
A suggestion I thought of, if possible, is to remove impact damage to the heli. So like if it slams into the ground, it will never explode, no matter what. But instead the men inside can get hurt depending on the speed at which the heli crashes, and if it hits hard enough, the men will die. Also, if possible, have it so that while the heli wont explode, it will get disabled. If it hits too hard the rotors will be ruined and so it wont be able to fly until repaired, but still not explode.
So if that heli slams into the ground at 400 speed, it wont explode but it wont be flyable either, and the crew might have a chance to survive. This seems like the best option when it comes to crash landings, allthough it'd just be begging for kamakazi runs. If possible, you could set it so it doesn't die if it hits the ground? Or static meshes? But if it hits like another vehicle, it'll go boom like normal.

I wish there was a really clever damage model combined with some accurate physics calculations it would definitely be fun and challenging to play. Thats the kind of thing the military must try and simulate, does a chopper fly with only 3 rotors out of 4 still attached - would be cool to find out in the middle of getting attacked by a 50 cal
I'm commenting just to say really if they made the heli too resistant to ground damage & you will make road killing with them more viable.
Big problem with this game is that its arcadey not a simulation. All the soil acts like solid concrete with no deformation upon any impact. Rapid and instant deceleration makes a massive difference to collision damage calculations afaik
