If you are attentive enough , you can spot snipers miles away without any zoom, yesterday on Zatar, i was a bit down east of centerhill i saw a lil black dot next to a suply crate up to the village. It was a sniper

It works up to 50m..

The whole point is that it doesn't render above a certain distance, neither does grass.

Although it does slightly blend in, I don't think it's enough for the human eye to miss. One of the bigger reasons being that the player is still laying against the barren ground. Now if he was hiding in a couple of bushes you might not see him. Still though, even without the ghillie on some maps like Ghost Train, Mestia, Fool's Road etc. you can lay prone in the grass while an entire enemy squad walks by you. Had a memorable moment when my squad was moving on Fool's Road, and a at least a dozen militia guys were going straight in our direction. Everyone got prone, and amazingly all the militia moved passed us without even noticing.

Half the issue is being somewhere where the eyes are not drawn to. Sometimes hiding near or in bushes can be a problem as when scanning terrain the eye is drawn to bushes, tree-trunks and such. I spend about 15 mins on a map as a sniper which i didn't die for the entire round quite close to an enemy APC in a overwatch position, the sound of the engines masked my position and if the APC had a good firing position, so did i :) In the time i was there i only fires 2 or 3 shots, to take out a sniper, a heavy AT guy and a machineguner which were all firing or in a fire position. Only trouble was that the recon i was giving my commander soon made that APC's position and the huge enemy positions totally overrun.

Sorry for my ignorance with weapons names, But I was on the fools road map and I can shoot and kill four times the distance accurately with not the sniper rifle but the second one, sorry its classed as sharpshooter I think!

Anyway went to the same great spot to kill player with the sniper rifle and although I could see closer up with the sight I could not kill jack. I must have killed twelve with the lesser kit at the same spot.

So is there some defect with the sniper kit?

The issues isn't it drawing close up, but its from over 50 meters that it doesn't seem to appear.

I believe you're referring to the marksman kit, and I also believe the answer to your question, is that yes, there is a major defect with the sniper kit:

Project Reality Sniping : Online Video | Veoh Video Network

[apologies for the music, I didn't want to infringe on any copyright and I had only recently finished portal :P ]

Edit: To clarify, you're looking for the tiny dust-puffs to show where the shots are landing ;)

I tested in in single player today with much success; you need to wait to fire. Count to 3 "alligators" :-)

Shocking i know. Deviation still occurs with your shots if you move the scope any, which is why the video on archer shows constant misses.
