Idea for In-Game Voip

Post by NikovK »

Rather than transmitting live voice messages within the squad structure, would it be possible to "broadcast" what you say inside the gameworld, much the same way that we hear voice binds in the local area? I'd like to be able to talk to anyone I run up to on the battlefield, and to find enemy troops who are being a little too noisy.

wouldn't that need a lot of bandwidth? It would be nice, but something tells me there is a technical limitation.

I wouldn't imagine so. If you tied being able to hear someone with how far you were from them, then everyone on the map wouldn't need to receive your voice messages. If everyone, or just each team, were in one large VOIP channel but a script muted or unmuted players depending on their distance to one another, then maybe added a decible modifier between more distant players...

Well it would be ambitious but very immersive. Anyone up for being a message runner?

I had this idea a long time ago, but was told it coudln't be done. I think it's worth investigating again though, seeing as the first time I asked it the game hadn't even been released.

wwould LOVE this idea if it was possible!

and a 'radioman' class can talk to any other radioman, regardless of distance!

well, obviously you balance things, if you have 10 radiomen, you will have no support gunners, no medics, etc.
you would loose quickly.

That is a good idea, don't know about the radio man Idea. I can't see a use for it.

a radio man class works better with like a ww2 or vietnam mod, as it is easily conciavbeable that by 2010 (when this war is set) every soldier could have an earpiece and at least communication with the sl, and maybe with others.

I had an idea like this before. My idea would be to feature several "chat channels". Basically you have the choice to broadcast your own voice messages between not only your squad, but your enitre team, your commander and players within the same vehicle all seperately. This way you could talk your APC driver who may not be on the same squad as you, and tell them that an enemy is behind them.

It also helps to have some kind of small box of sorts to appear when someone speaks on VOIP. As it is right now all you can see is some small text with the player's name on it. Why not something a little more flashy or noticable when someone speaks.

I don't know about listening to your enemy speaking, besides I don't think every soldier is going to understand the various dialects of arabic and chinese, reality wise.

Support people have a radio on their chest (I think he is superman, how else can he carry that gun, gear, a radio, and all that ammo).

It's 2001 all over again!

This is a great idea, would be nice to have it in BF2 for sure, first time I saw this was in OFP ... as you can tell I really liked that game  .

As for the radioman class, it wouldn't really be necessary in the modern setting, but it would add to the chain of command structure to have specific channels for different levels of command.

For example, the squad members would be able to talk to eachother and their CO (their SL), also the SLs would be able to talk to eachother and their CO (the Commander).

Depending on if the radio talk buttons can be modified, perhaps the "b" key could be your "command level" members, then the "v" key could be your CO. It would have to perform a specific function according to the player's status, squad member, squad leader, or commander.
