Yeah it would seem that the Iron Gator(USS Essex) could be a good stand in, we would just have to check if it is possible to land on it also you would have to be limited to 1 or 2 jets just to avoid cluster on the deck.

The USS Essex is an LHD Ship... he can transport AV8B Harrier and J.S.F. F35STOVL and many helicopter, that all kind of aircraft, so it is a Carrier ;)

USS Essex (LHD-2) is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship built at what is now the Northrop Grumman Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and commissioned on 17 October 1992 while moored at North Island NAS beside the Kitty Hawk (CV-63).

That should end all discussion on if it is/not a carrier. and look at the deck, how many planes are there? So unless i'm blind I see only helis no harriers, fights nothing.

the carrier in iron gator is to small, it may seem big on a vBF2 map but is is really small. I say its the size of the Airfield on Kashan from wall to wall(End to end)

Traditional definition of a carrier:
An aircraft carrier is a warship designed with a primary mission of deploying and recovering aircraft, acting as a sea-going airbase. Aircraft carriers thus allow a naval force to project air power great distances without having to depend on local bases for staging aircraft operations.

Traditional definition of an AAS(USS Essex Wasp class Amphibious Assault Ship):An amphibious assault ship (also referred to as an amphibious assault carrier or commando carrier) is a type of helicopter carrier employed to land and support ground forces on enemy territory by an amphibious assault. While often resembling aircraft carriers, the role of an amphibious assault ship is fundamentally different: its aviation facilities have the primary role of hosting helicopters to support forces ashore rather than to support strike aircraft. However, they are capable of serving in the sea-control role, embarking aircraft like Harrier fighters and ASW helicopters.
 (since its the cool thing)

Lt. Soucy beat me to it also the link to the Iron Gator information states that it is the USS Essex.

A pic of a carrier is CV-43 USS Coral Sea(Decommissioned)

Now guys the carriers that EA/Dice have produced would in no way fit the current PR jets. We are lucky they fit the helos in PR. The only way i see of a PR map having carrier based aircraft would be the modeling/skinning/coding of a new carrier model.

off-topic:Rhino I challenge you to a Carrier Picture war!!!!!!!!!!! :p

On-Topic:As i hope most people can see a aircraft carrier is very different to the (Rather Poor) USS Essex model in the current version of PR.

P.S:Cant wait for the USS George H. W. Bush, it will be the 77th US Aircraft Carrier. :D

The Hornet IS a mostly based carrier aircraft. It would be really awesome if we could see some of these based on the BF2 carriers in PR though. :D

The F-35 has birth defects so that could take some time.

Yes it carries aircraft but its not classified as an Aircraft Carrier, its an Amphibious Assault Ship. You can believe whatever you want but the facts are here for everyone to see. I will say no more to further drive this thread off topic.

If anyone has actually read this thread you will see the many reasons as why it is not classified as an Aircraft Carrier, so I don't see how anyone who can read says it is. This thread has no meaning anymore the original question has been answered and now its turning into a argument.

Current carrier based strike fighter is the F/A-18E or F/A-18F, also known as the "Super Hornet"... massive update to the "Hornet".

YouTube - Future Weapons: The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69)

Regular hornets are still used by the USMC afaik.

The USS Essex class, which is a LHD, typically can handle:

AV-8B Harrier II
CH-53 Super Stallion
CH-46 Sea Knight
UH-1N Huey
AH-1W Super Cobra

In the future it will presumably also handle:
MV-22B Osprey
F-35B Lightning II
UH-1Y Huey
AH-1Z Super Cobra

No, it would not handle the Marine Corps' F18C/Ds. The USMC chose not to upgrade to the Super Hornet (F/A-18E/Fs)as the Navy did in favor of waiting for the JSF. The Navy on the other hand took the upgrade to replace it's aging Tomcat fleet. The F18 has flown off of the Essex IN PR for balance purposes, but it is not realistic.

Marine Fighter Squadrons are often attached to Carriers however and operate just as a US Navy Fighter Squadron would. So yes, they do operate off of Super Carriers, which can essentially hold just about every helicopter known to mankind as well as many jets, as long as they are properly fitted. Hell, even a C130 landed on a carrier :P

Well, this "assault Ship" is big enough to hold Harriers.....so logically the Harrier could be put on it in say...

-Gulf of Oman
-Jabal Al-Burj
-Zatar Wetlands

Other maps that could use the Harrier:
-Al Kufrah Oilfields
-Fools Road
-Kashan Desert(yes the Army doesnt use the Harrier, but the USMC doesnt use the A-10
-Battle for Qinling
