It isn't the damage any particular one shell does, its that the force of a large number of shells hitting the chassis in a short period of time prevents the reactive armor from functioning as intended. The effects of a GAU-8 are similar to that of a MK-20 Rockeye. The large number of direct hits on the same surfance (often the top armor), will penetrate the fuel and ammo storage compartments, even self sealing ones are of limited use against multiple hits. Even if the crew survived the fragments, the tank would be more or less ineffective. The best way to think of this is the "double-tap" used in close quarters. While one round on a single surface may not be sufficient to penetrate, but two rounds on the same spot will double the effect of the second round. When there are 10 30mm rounds of DU and API hitting the same spot, the effect is essentially many times larger, which is one of the main points of the GAU-8, allows for a larger number of direct hits with more accuracy than a standard tritonol based bomb, and can kill a potentially larger number of targets than a plane equipped with a set of MK-20s. Either way, the gun is more accurate than in previous versions.
Thanks for taking the time to explain that and I can see where you are getting at. So basically your saying its not necessarily the round penetrating, its more 5 or 6 rounds hitting the same spot?

Also what are DU & API?

Cheers

DU is Depleted Uranium, a very, very dense material used for the penetrator of an AT round. It relies on the old Harder metal > softer metal principle (Just how a steel sword will damage a Bronze one while taking little damage); Since most armour is less dense (and therefore hard) than DU, the projectile will lose a lot less energy through spreading and distorting, energy which will instead go into pushing through the tank more.

API is Armour Piercing Incendiary, which is a standard AP round with an incendiary component, which will either detonate on contact or shotly after, inside the target.

A DU round, in SABOT.

Um, this video was completely staged. Its part of a documentary on the History channel about HD film, and not a shot was actually fired (except the flares, and some stock footage). The part with the lines up trucks exploding was a series of gasoline bombs and the tank being shot was also staged using packets of Thermite. I wouldnt base anything on this video seeing as its so fake. but it does look nice, and is very dramatic

Do you have proof of this?

I'm fairly certain the GAU-8 effectiveness against modern tanks is OPEC in all likelyhood. :muted:

Why cant we get that many flares in PR? The A-10 we get has only 30 flares. and if we drop as many as we did in the video we'd only get off maybe 2 missiles and some of the cannon. Which the A-10 has more. Im sure flares arent that expensive, heavy or large. 30? How about 60 or 100. And pressing your countermeasures key just once will release like 10 flares in succession. Maybe it release a flare per second. or per 2 seconds.

Ive found it quite annoying to hold the X key whilst coming to do an attack run.
