Crash to Desktop After Splash

Post by Scopers »

Having picked up the fever to play PR again, I double-checked to make sure I still had the latest version (I do) and opened up my rusty Project Reality shortcut. The splash screen for Battlefield 2 loads, then my screen goes black, flickers, then I am unceremoniously dumped back onto the desktop.

Cue recovery methods. I double-check the shortcut target and starting directory, then append it with resolution tweaks. No deal. I reinstall BF2, reinstall the 1.41 patch, and the latest version of PR + maps. Same problem. I force resolution in all video.con files. Nothing.

The problem occurs with vanilla Battlefield 2 as well as PR, so I am unsure if this belongs here. I apologize for my rationale, but if I want anyone doing tech support on my crippled Battlefield install, it's the boys and girls that play this mod.

Technical specs as follows:

Windows XP Home SP3
Radeon X1900XTX (Catalyst 8.6)
Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4ghz
Asus P5WDH-DX
2gb Kingston RAM

The game worked fine a month ago. No idea what the problem is now. Any help much appreciated. Thank you!

Vista or XP? Running program as administrator on Vista seems to fix lot of things. Also you seem to have dual core, try running PR with only one core, I dont remember how you could do this but worth a try.

I can't really think anything compicated right now :P

For now, I'm ruling out core dependency as I've been playing Battlefield 2, and Project Reality, on both cores for years.

I'm growing increasingly suspicious of the video drivers, which although recent could be conflicting with the game. They were installed over a clean card, but I'll be re-applying 8.6 to see if this is a possible fix. Thanks for help so far!

EDIT: Confirmed fix by reapplying the 8.6 Catalyst drivers. Problem was definitely driver-overlap related. Thanks for all help.
