A brief question on .50 cals.
Okay i just wanted to make a little post on a query of mine...
Do .50 cal machine guns really do that much damage to helicopters, as depicted in Project Reality?

1. Helicopters are designed to be lightweight, and therefore don't have very much armor.
2. .50 cal bullets are freaking huge.
3. ???
4. Profit!!!
Considering how much damage it does to even lightly armored vehicles, it only makes sense that it would pulverize a chopper.

No they do much worse. But of course the altitudes and engagement ranges in PR are psychotic. Not to mention most pilots in game are reckless.Psykogundam wrote:Okay i just wanted to make a little post on a query of mine...

Lol Tirak, nice pic. point noted, allthough i allready knew how massive the bullets are. I just figured, transport helis have a lot of inner compartment space and when rounds go in they would go out the far side, but hom much damage to hydrolics and electronics would a barrage of fiddys do to a gunship or Blackhawk for example?
I imagine for a gunship the damage would be tromendous, but for a blackhawk which is like a flying mini-bus, it mightnt be so fatal...but improbably wrong ^_^

You've got to factor in size, weight and velocity, all three of these things are pretty high, take into account the lighter weight materials of the helicopter, and the .50 will shred it. Sure, some attack helicopters may be a little more robust, but this is a bullet desinged to break anything short of an inch thick of armor.

it really depends in the end on where they hit, but yes generally, they do a hell of a lot of damage to choppers.

The fuel tanks and crew compartment of an Apache are armored against 23mm rounds.Psykogundam wrote:didnt a video about apache gunships (posted here a while back) say that the apache has armour against bullets? or somthing along those lines

attack helos have armor to help them against LIGHT caliber fire. The 50 caliber is not in that family of calibers. It is why the 50 cal sniper was the only one to penetrate the bullet proof glass in vanilla BF2. But the 50 cal penetrates usually anything up to light armor.

iirc the apache has a metal tub that should stop a 20mm round, but im thinking for most choppers it would mess them up bad, like what if it hit a a blade, that would have to destroy it.

Think it would depend on how it hit the blade, a small hole in it wouldn't make flying impossible, then again I wonder how fast the blade spins, if it's fast enough it could rip into the bullet while it's being penetrated.zangoo wrote:iirc the apache has a metal tub that should stop a 20mm round, but im thinking for most choppers it would mess them up bad, like what if it hit a a blade, that would have to destroy it.
The part I don't like atm is that choppers take the same damage everywhere. Btw anyway actually ever heard of a helo being shot down (or heavily damaged?) by a .50 in real life?

Also they have been "moisted" with a special glue-like liquid on the stomach of the apache, to further resist small arms fire.
Yep documentaries rulez

50. Cal bullets are in the most part Anti-Armour (Small), helis are a soft skin type vehicle, So helis stand no chance.Death_dx wrote:Think it would depend on how it hit the blade, a small hole in it wouldn't make flying impossible, then again I wonder how fast the blade spins, if it's fast enough it could rip into the bullet while it's being penetrated.

And I'm pretty sure heaps of choppers have been shot at by 50. cal...but their are never any survivors to tell their story.
50. Cal wins at Everything

Re: A brief question on .50 cals.
imo it isnt the question what a . 50 can do with tht chopper. I think the bullet wents on the one side in and on the other out. And think they shot .50 AP Rounds...
But i think the Problem in PR is @ the moment that it is so easy to hit everything (even a chopper) with the .50 guns.
There has to be much more recoil and a much bigger bullet drop. So it gets harder to hit the coppers and give the chopper crew more time to engage the target. And i think the guns of the choppers are a little bit underpowerd.
I have it on kashan this weekend. The .50 guy and i as gunner start shooting @ the same time. And we fly about 600 -700 high. My range to target was over 800m and he was able to shot us down...
Dont think that this work so easy and fast in RL...

Yea, i think if a round hit a rotor it wouldnt have the helo drop out of the sky instantly because there are three more rotors to compensate in a lot of cases, especially in the case of transport helos. Id love to hear answers from sombody in the airforce who studied it, then i could have some closure.zangoo wrote:iirc the apache has a metal tub that should stop a 20mm round, but im thinking for most choppers it would mess them up bad, like what if it hit a a blade, that would have to destroy it.

In my opinion, the coaxial fiddy is the most rediculous weapon in the game, and it nerfs gameplay. It is...a super fast, accurate M82 with a massive clip capacity. If it had a scope it would devistate the entire battlefield. It neads to have a really uncomplimentary bullet drop that you can see visually. It just hasnt been focused on as a major issue, but it kinda is.

I thought all coaxial machine guns in tanks and APC's were 7.62mm?Psykogundam wrote:Yea, i think if a round hit a rotor it wouldnt have the helo drop out of the sky instantly because there are three more rotors to compensate in a lot of cases, especially in the case of transport helos. Edit: Have you seen the new Rambo? A .50 cal does devastate a battlefield
