sniper detector

Post by Lynx »

there has been a long history of use with these high-tech sniper detection and location systems such as this one in the link:

Sniper Detector - random images - moonbuggy

Yes that's right a mannequin head on a stick!! LOL

I think I just became the proud owner of probobly the most ridiculous PR suggestion to date

But I'm actually (mostly) serious so hear me out;
I'd like to see this

It would make finding snipers/marksmen less of a peeking and dodging the bullet event

I would also like to see mirrors for corner-peeking but I don't think the bf2 engine support it or the devs would be willing to spend the effort into a work-around for a mirror. so sorry for the digression; lets head back to the topic.

so top 10 reasons why we should have this:

1 You would no longer need to use your own noggin to find the origin of those long range shots so just use the mannequin head on a stick

2 Because you won't need to use your own body as a sniper lure it would feel less like a game

3 Encourage sniper teams to work together more effectively in urban scenarios where 1 would lure the enemy sniper to fire and the allied sniper would be able to get a fix and take out the target (think of the movie: enemy at the gates)

4 Adds realism

5 would encourage snipers to identify their targets before they shoot

reasons 6-10: more fun and more interesting gameplay

how it could be implemented:
the marksman and sniper kit would have these and the soldier would hold in the right hand so it sticks up and then go prone to make it look like the dummy head is at normal height

no click: the dummy head is upright like in the photo

right click: for pointing the stick at 45 degree angle
to make it look like the dummy is peeking around a corner

left click: for pointing at a 90 degree angle against the ground
to hide the dummy head and simulate that there's a prone soldier

Finally,optional stuff for balancing:
*Allow it to be used to knock those annoying civilians unconscious

*Give the dummy head only to snipers in urban maps(personally I think any map could use this)

*Each time the dummy head is hit it is destroyed and you would need to rearm the dummy head from a supply point.

*Add a jacket to the dummy head if it seems to fake too fool anyone.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, hope you had a laugh and hopefully we'll see it in game. 8-)

The most ridiculous certainly not. I was thinking about allowing us to use the shovels in combat. One well placed hit in the head and a nice sound. hahah

Personally i dont like this idea.
My reason for this are

The render distance in PR is only around 50-60 meters so at distances greater then that the snipers ghillie suit does not help him blend in to his surroundings and he stands out.

What kind of system are you talking about ?

One that is like a radar, once the shot is fired it calculates the trajectory of the shot and pin-points the snipers location ( this must be set up before the shot is taken) or something a normal solider carrys on him ? If that was the case it would have to be something like a mirror because it would be to expencive for an army to equipe all of there soldiers with a handheld device that could do this.

But like you said mirrors are near-impossible in PR and i dout the DEVS would pursue this when there a more important things

just my 2 cents

LOL! But i think no sniper would actually shoot those. If it doesnt move like a player, it will not be fired at. I think a sniper could tell the difference without much of a problem in this game. And i'm not sure how far it would render anyway.

I dont think you would use this option if you have eny sence at all.
If you are reveling your position to the enemy you maybe attrack heavy fire.
Snipers are a priority target because of the obsservation abillity.
And that wall he is lying behind will not stop a bullet from a modern cal 308 - 50 cal sniper rifel

Pfff as if you need a dummy head... those rifles make such an obvious directional sound even on Medium sound settings that you can trace a sniper within his second or third shot. Considering the majority of them still just sit in the same position trying desperately to hit something (not realizing the terrible deviation is built in) you track them down and knife them, and then you use radio commands to teabag them since they can't see you:

"Hey Thanks; Thanks Champ; Thanks Champ" [and then a 'lol @ sniper' over global chat if you're feeling particularly cheeky]

Talking about shovels, can you actually use it as a shield to protect yourself against incoming bullets?

Its realistic...but im not sure it could even be done with the bf2 engine (Even tho somthing simmilar was done in a BFV mod)

Do you really think some shovel would stop FMJ rifle projectiles effectivly? Then why dont use soldiers simple metal as body armour and become unkillable? I highly doubt the shovel would change much. On the other hand, i never fired a weapon, so i should be quiet.

LOL kitty corner shot

because terrorists would cut off a man's head but NEVER shoot a cute defenseless kitten

but back to the topic; Believe it or not I actually think this would really be useful.

who else thinks the same?

How'd you use that mannequin in the open? The snipers I come across usually spot me in the open. How'd you use it in Kashan for example? Using it in an urban map won't make much difference, as the lonewolf would just keep shooting as the squad moves.

Cheers.
