Sub Machine guns and body armour
I would like to see sub machine guns such as P-90s, MP5s, MP-7 and such issued realisticly to soldiers on here at some point, it would be cool to give certain classes these smaller weapons and have their sprint be up, as opposed to carrying a heavier assualt rifle and maybe the sprint being slower. and while on the subject, maybe also you could have body armour optional for some classes (if its even possible) and it would effect their sprint.
just throwing out some ideas.

ya, I would expect them to be given to engineers/ordinance (explosives) guys and pilots and guys that arent the front line grunts, plus it'd make the people that want to fly or fix tanks as they retreat from having something genuinly deadly like an assault rifle, but not entirely defenceless so they cant repair a tank and then help it out shooting down every guy the tank misses

Theoretically, all of the non frontline personnel get a PDW to replace the sidearm in the future. Or at least that's how some people think it should be, since sidearms are becoming increasingly inadequate against the body armour. Though since we never had proper army fight each other this hasn't become an issue really, but since BF2 DO have proper armies kill and butcher each other, and since we r set in the near future conflict i think it's reasonable that all the support troops carry at least a PDW.
The question i'm more interested though is that many of the modern body armour can stop enough these lighter rounds comfortably. Some like the new improved SPI plated armour, and the flexible dragon skin r probably even immune, well we'll see about the SAPI plates once they actually get some real treatment or convincing ballistic test (yeah right... like the Natick would ever let the public know of it), but at least for the dragon skin as an example it was demonstrated to be completely impervious to level 3 threat that's ball rifle rounds mind u (7.62mm from an AK) and they hammered the vest with almost a clip worth of it in all coverage area plus several clip of 9mm from an MP5.
This made me thought, just how much can we expect from these PDW and if u can actually kill a soldier with it especially when he is fully geared with his armour. Frankly speaking not all of the report i heard of the so called "effective light weight" 5.7 mm round used in P90 have been good, things like it not tumbling properly in tissues to failing in penetrating kirsat body armour layer in some circumstances, and the 4.6 mm round that the MP7 uses haven't exactly got enough solid record either.

Damn it, not PDW i hate this weapon since HL2 ;]
Ugly little thingy...
I vote for MP5 ;] or one of these m16-like-smgs-on-9mm-ammo ;]
EDIT : FN90 is lovely weapon, why not ;] But... is it common on battlefield?

THE WHOLE CLASS SYSTEM need a revamp.
Including pilot class's.
They add about 2/3 new ones and combine a couple of old/new ones, so the totla number remain similar. They should alos add a bit off weapon custamization with this.
e.g. replace C4 with an M203 but with only 3 rounds - yu choose!
The most important one would be a test for pilots, they would have to pass to be able to use the vehicle. This is where the new SMG could be included very neatly and with a chose mabey as well.
(so have been mentioned previously)

For the most part SMGs aren't used nor needed in a traditional military battle. I think most engineers would carry compact weapons; the U.S for example would issue the M4A1 to combat engineers and such. I think a pilot might have an SMG around, so it may be appropiate if there is a pilot class. Other than that I think the AT class should be replaced with dumbfire rocket launchers such as the AT4, and given an assault rifle to go along with it.

Maybe a new class, like "Vehicle Crewman", and the vehicle crewman class would have light armor, an SMG, pistol, knife, and binocs? Vehicle crewman would operate all heavy vehicles and aircraft(tanks, APC's, AA vehicles, helos and fixed wing aircraft), regular infantry would only be able to use light vehicles(buggy's and HMMWV's). Something like that.
But SMG's can be effective on the modern battlefield when used properly. Also, smg's like the MP-5 seem to be popular with helo pilots and armor crewmen, or atleast the ones I have met. Also, SF guys seem to like the MP-5 when on CQB missions.
