Fire as a weapon, Accidental Fire and Fire extinguishers

Post by turnpipe »

Start a fire to smoke out enemy.
Weapons may also accidently start fires.
The fire renderings of course would be toned down for performance.
Engineer class given fire extinguishers.

hehhe this is a unique suggestion wow thats a first!

yea engine limitations make this impossible (im prety sure not even an engine as robust as arma could do this in a convincing way)

but yea, it IS an actual thing that apparently happens, especially with sustained machinegun fire on a target, it will start buildings and fields on fire, and if its dry season, it can actually start a rather LARGE fire! would be badass to see, but i doubt any game engines will model this for at least the next 10 years? who knows maybe arma2..

I've suggested this on other boards before. Basically, I envisioned that when things took damage, or when an explosion happened, there was a random chance they'd spawn a "fire" object, which in turn spawned smoke and could spawn "child" fire objects. A fire extinguisher would be necessary to take out the fire.

Would be awesome to see in, but I'm not holding my breath.

What was that with 1024 networkable objects in BF2? This would more than break the limit, sadly.

Seems to happen quite often at mil training bases around here, with the very dry months we've had. They start a small fire when they use the tracer rounds :p

hehe, well I completed that game from start to finish. It was excellent but it was such a long time ago I assumed we were talking about a later sequel and I never played any of those.

It was an all time great for sure, very good atmosphere. Like a horror movie with stickmen it shouldnt be possible
I think I did play a version with 3d syndicate style angle to it, maybe I did play a sequel also

& the wiki is right, it was first in 1994 or so

would be nice to see this happen, even if it's limited to 50 meters or so, I think bf2 could handle a 50 meter fire

Yup, but it still modelled fully destructible environments, realistic LOS and line of fire, and fire years before games like Crysis did. I like to mention it because people tend to forget that these things aren't "new". And I believe, though I may be mistaken, that at the time it came out, it was quite an achievement.

This would be really cool/nice to see in game but I doubt the bf2 engine could do it or anything like it

Actually, I'm pretty sure it was suggested once before. Can't remember who by, but about 18 months ago I'm prety sure someone suggested it. A good google search of the site might turn it up. Either way it's good as damnit an original suggestion, nice one turnpipe :)

And yeah, it'd be an interesting feature, but on BF2? Nopers.

AIX has flamegrenades. But IDK about BF2 being able to set them, if nothing else you could set grass to have damage, and when it is damaged enough it will start on fire (release invisible incendiary weapon).
