[Question]On the Huey

Post by Kenny »

I used the search function and couldent find anything on this. Will we get door mounted guns if so what will they be the same as on the blackhawk or we looking at something different anothe type of defense.

My reason for asking is that the only current way to surive an attack either by infantry or car it to hope that the guys that your carring have the mind to shoot back or dodge, and escape normaly dying in the process or getting all the passangers killed.

I have know Idea what has been planned as I havent found and posts showing this.

I believe it will in a later release. It is one along with the Merlin as being unarmed.

If your getting shot at by a vehicle, or even infantry, you need top get out of there fast, not hover and hope that the door gunner still has ammo left after continuously firing it and that he can actually hit something. :)

What I do is I go door gunner with an auto rifleman kit on both sides, its essentially the same thing.

tbh the guns on transport choppers are pretty useless, i see little need for them, they are useful for suprresing troops on the ground and somtimes attacking command trucksbut thats about it

So give the door gunners ironsights... What, don't tell me you all haven't complained in game about not having them.

I've seen renders of the M240D on the huey around here someplace by one of the EoD devs.

On PR choppers are easy to shoot down, lets not go rambo with them eh?

In real life Hueys are part of a Light Atttack Squadron along with Cobras, so yes, they are just about always armed.

I belive in the film "We were Soliders" it shows Huey's with some form of LMG on either side (though it could be a heavier caliber). Though I know some disputethe film it atleast shows its practically applyable

Typically if deployed with door guns Hueys carry the M240D, as stated before. transport helo's weapons are designed for suppressing light resistance around the LZ not for direct attacks.

But yeah, I'd like to see them. If only so I don't have to request an automatic rifleman kit to sit in a huey firing on ground targets while yelling "Get some! Get some!" down my mic.

As my squadmates from Archer know, anyone who runs is an insurgent. Anyone who stands still is a well diciplined insurgent.
The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

The Merlin is armed with two general purpose machine guns converted for the air role, although there is provision for additional weaponry to be fitted at a later date.
Linky

Also, the Navy version can carry torpedeos and depth charges, IIRC.

Mounted weapons are planned for both the Huey and the Merlin. Though not for 0.8, definitely in a future release.

If they're so easy to shoot down, then why they have no guns?(sides from squadron mates)

I made a thread asking about this earlier and essentially the admins told me that it has been suggested before(which is why they closed the thread), that hueys with mounted doorguns have already been modelled and that there is a possibility that an armed huey will be implemented. As I later discovered after some proper research and as the admins/devs pointed out, hueys in current service are rarely armed. They are used as supply and/or transport aircraft, although less frequently now than before. In most combat operations, Blackhawk helicopters will be used, although I think we got to the conclusion that Hueys are still being used.

Anyway, I think most pepople would think that arming the huey would be fun, which is why I asked about it in the first place. However, there are a few solid arguments against it. Like I already mentioned, one is that newer huey models aren't armed as they used to be(in vietnam). Another is that the huey might lose some of its intended role, which is now purely inf transport and dropping supplies. Also, I find that being forced to work with the rest of the team to find somewhat safer LZs than you might chose with a blackhawk(at least in terms of hostile infantry) contributes to the realism and teamwork that is Project Reality. With patience and lots of practice, I very rarely die from infantry/vodnick or even APC fire, providing I got at least a minimum of intel from my team about hostile positions. This is basically because of the great speed of the huey, which should prevent you from dying except during landings(which could be made very quickly indeed with some practice). What might sometimes kill me are HATs(if a LZ is deemed secure but isn't or if the extraction has no cover fire) or AA missiles. Also, if a squad is scattered and spends a long time getting into your heli and keeps telling you to wait, that obviously exposes you and increases the likelyhood of getting killed. If unreliable people keeps yelling for extractions without securing the LZ, you'll be better off at the carrier. Like most other operations in this game, helicopter extraction by huey gets alot easier with practice and teamwork.

Summed up; the devs could easily implement armed hueys, but I'm not sure they have any reason to.

Edit; here's my thread about the exact same topic; https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f18-pr-suggestions-feedback/39858-huey-minigun-rockets.html
Essentially, that thread explains why hueys aren't armed any longer(cobras) and that the devs knows what they're doing better than we fans do.
