PR First time player evaluation

Post by Benning »

First off, let me compliment the programing team for producing such a pretty and stable mod. The workmanship is of high quality and everything works as listed in the packaged manuals. I was actually suprised at how easy the whole set up was!

I found this mod because I was looking for something that represented a slightly more realistic gameplay from BF2. I presonally love BF2, and think the game has many merits. So this mod sounded like it was the answer to my search.

I was wrong. I have found the gameplay to be slow, with large amounts of downtime. I found that the lethality combined with very distant spawn points and long respawn timers excessive. Basically, I found that after several hours of play....I pretty much spent alot of time doing nothing. Waiting on respawn, waiting on a chopper to spawn, running for 10 minutes to die once I got there, ect....Then repeat above.

Now I know the idea is "Reality". I know the reality of combat. I have served 8 years in the 82nd Airborne. What I was hoping for was the "Fun" of BF2 with a touch of reality. I think this mod has awesome potential. I think reality has gotten a little overboard at the cost of the point of playing a game. Which is to have fun.

Its your mod after all, I just hope you loosen up a bit, so to speak.

Thanks,

Benning

Fair enough, your points might be valid.
However, if you are not filling out a role to a squad or working with the team, then you will find PR very unsatisfying, as it has been designed to be played this way; without the option of lone wolfing, unlike BF2.

It's all about squad play. First off all make sure you find a squad with a SL that uses VOIP and know's what he's doing. If your still not impressed there is allot of videos that shows PR being a game with enough of speed and action combined with reality to make you enjoy the game.

yea check them videos, thats whats PR is all about, also make sure you join a squad that either:

1. is called voip or teamwork or something like that
2. the squad leader is vocal
3. the squad leader has officer kit.

also, what servers are you joining ? i assume you are American, join tactical gamer as it a very popular American server

Probably just not the mod for you man. You say you wanted the "fun" of BF2 with a little realism in it. IMO most people play this because we don't like the "fun" of BF2. We wanted realism and alot of that is what we get our fun from. Def agree with everyone else if you didn't get in a good VOIP squad you should before you judge the mod completely.
If brute force doesn't work.......your not using enough of it.

Practice Benning. When I first started it was like that. You get killed a lot, can't find enemies and spend a lot of time running around then dying. 8 years in the airbourne won't help much until you have mastered how the game plays. Try and find a squad with mics that stick together and put down rally points a lot. Then you wont have to spawn miles away and can stick with your squad. Then you will discover there is an awful lot of action waiting for you! I used to be very happy if i got any kills at all when I started, now an average game gives me roughly the same KDR as when I used to play bf2...

If your new, my best advise would be to grab the medic kit and be your squad leaders little nursey.

Lol Waah, no reason to degrade anyone to a SLs ***** :P

Well anyways Benning, I'm sad to hear that, ofcourse going from Vbf2 to PR is a big leap due to all the changes which you normally wouldn't be working with (deviation, respawn time, all that).. Unfortunatly as much as I also dislike it, I find it fun, because once you get good, you will be superior with whatever profession that you have chosen.

But really this mod is not something you can try out for 4 hours and then jugde from what you've seen. I would recommend alot of thing for you to try, but my fellow gents have already posted that so :)

Though this game has dramaticly changed in gameplay, it kinda focuses more on the players than anything else. As said you can't really solo without paying the ultimate price of being seriously owned.

Well I don't know, maybe this just wasn't your cup of tea.
But cheers for posting your thoughts, I think devs like such things.?.?.

When you get in a good squad, all that monotonous running and waiting seems alot less monotonous, and less frequent. For starters, your squad leader can set rallies so you can spawn closer to the combat. If you've got a decent commander and squad leaders, firebases go up for even more spawn points. Also...new guys tend to die alot. This is unavoidable. Just adapt, and you'll find yourself starting to get massive points in no time.

Also, if you're looking for anything like Base BF2...yeah, find a new mod. This is nothing like Base BF2, and if you expect it to be, you'll be disappointed. Try Nations At War if you want base gameplay with new gadgets, vehicles, weapons, and maps.

Lol :p But medics are useful pretty much no matter who plays as the medic. But if you have a newbie being the HAT/LAT in the squad, your pretty much fooked once a Humvee or APC rolls in ;)

Why do you suddently start flamming me?

Indeed he is... Unless your squad suddently recieve text message like this: "WHY CAN'T I DROP THE MEDIC BAG!!!!!"

Then I would be prefering the easy HAT way out :-)

PR has diffrent fun from bf2...and it differs from person to person

the fun I have in PR is not really the shooting part..its the team work part...never have i seen a game where team work is fun and important

im tired of the run, shoot, die, repeat part of "newer" games

PR makes bf2 look like one of those run, shoot, die games, liek cod4 and CS:S

Everytime I play with my team (22eR) we rock and there is a LOT of action, whatever the map, whatever the number of players on the server.

I know a lot of player say the same thing as you, but most of these, play with random public squad not using VOIP and real teamwork, do not understand the mod very well OR even worst, they're lonewolf.

You absolutely have to use voice communication and strong teamwork to have fun in this game. The best way to achieve it is to join a Pr dedicated clan.

Now, PR obviously has less arcade style of action like BF2, but when there is, its way more intense and you can lose a round and still have a strong feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction provided by good teamworking.

Now all these are great advice, suggestions stuff, BUT the reason I play is you have cool ironsights, weapons and you can ride shotgun on cars. And flying in a helicopter is a lot of fun, because you can look at the passing scenery. Well theres just my... what do they call it? Theres my 2 cents... I think thats what they call it...

As you can see, you are not alone there. Everyone who jumped in PR without having a helping hand (or understanding of the manual) had some rough time until they've found some teammates to play with. Give PR a shot with a team of players as described in this thread, and you'll notice the huge gameplay difference. Not just assets, as the default ones are doing pretty much the majority of work. Some kits have showels...You can't beat anyone to death with it, but you play that showel for the whole team.

As to a mod that is more like BF2, with a thin layer of reality i would say either, OPK or POE, POE more so. Both games add bits of realism to the game (like multiple ammo types for tanks) but retain things like crosshairs, SL spawns, and other staples of BF2 play.

However don't give up on PR just yet. The path to enjoying the game is long, hard, and paved with really high death numbers; but as everyone has said find an active squad and slowly but surely you'll end up having more fun...

I would especially advise against trying for the mobile assets until after you've slogged it as a grunt bit.
